Planet Fitness or At Home?

I know many of you hate Planet Fitness.
My work will kick in the $10 per month fee if I go to the gym 8 times a month. Are there any other hidden costs to PF beyond the $10 a month fee?
Am I better off taking advantage of the PF membership or just walking and doing things like squats and some arms stuff with weights at home? Do you get a better work out if you go to the gym?

I had a planet fitness membership, and there are no hidden costs as long as you don't want to take advantage of the tanning beds. (I wouldn't recommend it anyway, since there is no guarantee of the condition/age of the bulbs that I am aware of.) As for the gym being better, it depends on what you want to do. I personally found that I can do my work outs just as effectively at home BUT that if I go home after work I am less likely to work out then if I MAKE myself go straight to the gym. I like having a gym membership because if you can just get there you will get a work out in. There are too many distractions and chores at my house for me to consistently work out there.0

There might be just taxes in addition to the $10/month fee.
If your work is willing to kick in the $10 AND you're going to go the 8x a month I think it's a win-win. However it also depends on what your goals are and what you have at home to workout with.
I know there are a TON of PF bashers out there however my husband and I go there and it suits our needs. Contrary to popular belief or the rules at some PF's I can do dead lifts and lift heavy. There are also people there who are in great shape and they're not turned away. I personally like the gym. Yes, they have the "pizza mondays" and "bagel tuesdays" but regardless of what the haters have to say you actually DON'T have to have it! It's crazy, I know but you really can just walk away from it and not get in trouble! As for the lunk alarm my gym doesn't pull the alarm all the time. They did it this past Monday when I was there but this guy was being super obnoxious with banging the weight plates with every. single. rep. Cracked everyone up.
There's also a ton of cardio equipment there. More than I personally think is necessary but you never really have to wait for the cardio equipment.
Again, it depends on what you have at home and what you plan on doing if you go to the gym. If your company is going to pay for it I say take advantage before they decide to not do it any more.0 -
I think I have much of the same issue. I have 2 kids to contend with and plenty of things to do. Having to pay for the gym (I'll be reimbursed in my check) should keep me motivated to go or I'm going to be out that $10 if I don't go 8 times a month.
I need to work on arms and legs the most. I don't have a ton of money to drop on equipment so I'm kind of limited to just free weights at home.0 -
It depends on what you have at home. The main reason I would never join a Planet Fitness (although I might rethink my stance if it was free!) is their "judgment free" attitude that is really judgmental of those who lift heavy. They freaking ban DEADLIFTS! One of the mose basic, fundamental strength moves. I'm also not sure I could trust any trainer that would work at a place that would ban something like a deadlift. And, on occasion, I grunt and drop my weights, which would set off the lunk alarm. And no, I'm not seeking attention, I work out by myself at home! Another reason I'm wary is because they pass out pizza, bagels and cupcakes. Seems weird for a gym. If I was getting a free membership and I didn't have a decent weight/bench/rack set up at home, I would give it a go. At the very least, there'd be some different cardio machines so I could mix things up a bit and hopefully some free weights to do at least some heavy squats, bench, rows & military press. I'd also probably sneak into a corner and try to deadlift when no one was looking.0

And I don't get why people hate it. I have had expensive health club memberships (with snack bars, day spas, swimming, saunas etc) and I have had 24 hour fitness and Planet fitness. Personally I reached the same fitness level regardless of the perks! In fact having ONLY workout equipment kept me more focused and I wasn't tempted to call getting my nails done my Gym time lol! (I dont swim or play tennis or need classes so I didn't notice a difference.) On the other hand I do find the pizza perk at Planet Fitness kind of silly, but if you don't like it don't eat it!
Oh and I saw people doing dead-lifts all the time at my old plant fitness0 -
I had a planet fitness membership, but had to cancel it because I moved and there wasn't one close by me anymore. I had a yearly fee to pay of $40 on top of the monthly fee.0
