My doctor was suggesting that I was on my way there.
Anyone know how that would affect weight loss?

Metabolic syndrome is defined by multiple factors.
Metabolic syndrome increases your risk for multiple diseases such as heart attack and stroke. Losing weight will help all of the above numbers, decreasing the risk.
Here are the criteria for diagnosing metabolic syndrome:
Metabolic syndrome occurs when a person has three or more of the following measurements:
Abdominal obesity Waist >35 female, 40 male
Triglyceride level of 150 milligrams per deciliter of blood (mg/dL) or greater
HDL cholesterol of less than 40 mg/dL in men or less than 50 mg/dL in women
Systolic blood pressure (top number) of 130 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) or greater
Diastolic blood pressure (bottom number) of 85 mm Hg or greater
Fasting glucose of 100 mg/dL or greater
Insulin resistance or glucose intolerance (the body can't properly use insulin or blood sugar)
Having it should not affect weight loss, but would mean that it is more important for your health to lose weight than someone who was overweight but did not have the syndrome.
There are diets out there on the ne meant specifically for insulin resistance, but any healthy diet should work for you.

From what I have heard metabolic syndrome can afffect weight loss. If you have metabolic syndrome then you typically have elevated blood sugar and elevated insulin levels. With elevated insulin you tend to store body fat and not lose weight as easily. Doctors describe it as viscious cycle where your body is fighting very hard to prevent diabetes. It also is similar to prediabetes w/ elevated blood sugars but not quite full blown diabetes. Good luck to you. I hope you can control it. I have had this for 15 or 20 years and have struggled w/ my weight the whole time.0

Funny to see this post after seeing a post about how calories in vs calories out is the ONLY ONLY way... So I digress...
Metabolic syndrome can affect weightloss. Basically, it is hard for your body to deal with sugar (carbs like white bread and pasta, not just table sugar). You eat sugar, your body releases more insulin than necessary and in the long run, it makes it hard for your body to use stored fat for energy.
Google search. Maybe look for books on the subject at your local library? Many people with this respond well to low GI or low carb diets.0 -
There is a whole series on metabolic improvement here that you might find beneficial.

Basically - for most people, a low GI diet is just treating the symptom. The cure seems to be to move more.0 -

Agreed. Exercise is shown to make you more insulin sensitive.0 -
I was just diagnosed with this and put on Glucophage/metformin. I was also prescribed a low carb/low fat diet to help lose weight.0

I was diagnosed with it a few months ago. I've been on metformin 500mg bid for about 5 weeks now, along with a high protein diet (that's the aim, some days are better than others. my doctor actually suggested supplementing with a high quality protein shake wouldn't be a bad thing), moving more, and losing weight.
ETA - yes, it will make it more difficult to lose weight but it's not impossible.0
