I do TRX, crossfit, and kickboxing. I think if you're just starting out, it's important to know what you're doing. For me, that meant small classes where an instructor could correct my form and really push me.

I do. I love it more than my cardio (cycling and running). Remember: the more muscle you have, the more fat you can burn.

Pick up "The New Rules of Lifting for Wonen". EXCELLENT book! Author is funny!

New Rules of Lifting for Women or Starting Strength. Both great for beginners.

If you are looking to do weight training it is best to consult a personal trainer. I've seen more results in the last few weeks than I did doing classes for 6 months.

40 minutes of cardio 4 - 5 times per week. (stepper machine - for back of legs, upright bike - for quads, rowing for core / back / arms)

Then I have 4 weight routines
    1. biceps and chest
    2. triceps and back
    3. shoulders
    4. legs

    and abs every day

Works for me but just a suggestion.

Do you have access to a gym?

What are your goals? Fat loss? Strength? More definition?

Lifting is the closest thing i have to a religion.

I recommend starting out with Starting Strength.

Agree with New Rules of LIfting for Women. Informative, easy to read.
  • I stick to the basic 4 for now. Squat, push up, crunch with a twist, and back extensions. my husband who was very much into body building when we met said that was fine to start out with. Later you can do more. The thing I like about it is you can do it anytime any where.

I Like the Kettlenetics Kettlebell workout with Michelle Khai and I also like the Crunch Total Body Resculpt with Kendall Hogan and the Jari Love Dvd's are great. the Get Extremely ripped 1000 is supposedly suppose to be able to burn up to 1000 calories in the workout. I don't know but you definently get an awesome workout and burn a ton of em.

Strength training is a must all around...no only is it good for weight loss, but it certainly a must as we age to keep our bones and muscles from deteriorating. I alternate cardio with strength straining with few exceptions...Cardio one day and strength the next. If you have access to a gym most of them have trainers available for advice. Before getting into a full routine, start off with the basics....lunges, squats, dumbbell presses, tricep kickbacks with dumbbells. Form is everything and start light. Once you get the hang of these, then mix them up with combos such as lunges with bicep curls, squats with arm presses, etc.

Definately take up complimentary offers by gyms who offer free time with a personal trainer to get an idea how to get started. Good luck. :flowerforyou:

Sounds like a good compound lifting program like Stronglifts 5 x 5 would be ideal. Check out this group - the stickies explain the program in detail:
