Trainer or No Trainer

I am just interested in seeing how many of you work with a personal trainer vs alone ( with a buddy etc). If you are working with a trainer, what makes it diffefrent than being alone? If you stopped working with a trainer, why? Just a curious topic.

I started with a trainer years and years ago simply because I was a total beginner and didn't know proper form on any of the exercises. The trainer taught me how to squat, deadlift, etc. and after I learned the basics from them, I started working out on my own.
I personally don't think a trainer is needed beyond that point unless you have a physical/medical reason to need one there as you work out.0 -
Researching your own and learning by trial and error I feel is the best. It's what I've done and I think all the things you need to learn from fitness can be obtained free through the internet.0

I've been working with a trainer since the first of the year. He motivates me... I work out 3 x's a week and haven't missed one workout since January 1st. It's March 23rd today. That's almost 3 months without skipping a beat. I know for me, that if I didn't have the commitment to him, I wouldn't be doing so well. I'm down 10 lbs but more importantly I feel comfortable in my own skin again. I've lost 3 inches off my hips and more than an inch everywhere else. I've gained muscle in place of the fat so the 10 lbs is deceiving. That's my 2cents0

I have a trainer and will keep renewing with him as long as he's working. Keep in mind that although it's about the actual exercises (if a trainer stands there and watches you do cardio or does the same exercises over and over, fire them!) it's also about connections. IF (and yes, I know it's a big IF) you are able to connect well with your trainer, they can really help you stay on track and get better results that you do on your own.
I've been working with mine for almost 6 years now - and he's amazing! He inspires me to try things that I never believed I could before. He moved gyms about 2 years ago, and I found that without him I slid back into some not so great habits, gained weight and lost focus. Thank Heavens he came back to me.0 -

Never had one. I think the idea of "getting in shape" or losing weight is often times associated with obtaining a personal trainer. That being said, the results are going to come from you. Same with the weightloss. They can suggest things or help you learn correct ways to exercise but diet ( which is the most important part), eventually lands on you.0

I had many trainers over a two year time span... and only left mine because I switched gyms.
With the help of my trainer, I did things I never thought I would... and because of that, got a lot better results then I would have on my own.0 -
If you have a good trainer, s/he's worth every ridiculously expensive dollar. If you get a bad one, not so much, lol.
I hate working out - I mean I REALLY hate working out. But, I work so much harder when I'm working with him, I see much better results, and I don't get bored as easily. I go to the gym regularly in between sessions, because I know he'll expect that I am ready to move to the next level or heavier weights, etc. at my next session.
And, because of all of this, I am seeing better results and the sense of satisfaction I am feeling is almost as strong as my hatred for working out, lol.
I'm hopeful that I will get to the point where I can do this for myself - mostly because of the expense. But, for now, I am going to take full advantage!0
