lol.. take a knee, drink some whey and keep lifting brah
  • So you can't bulk up or rather build muscle and lose fat at the same time? I just don't get that part. I need to do both, but haven't started the lifting yet. Not sure if I am able to both at the same time. Please don't shoot me if I sound dumb. I am learning and we all had to start learning at some point. This is my time. I am the kindergartner of the group.

You dont sound dumb, thats a legit question for a noob(begginer) its real hard to gain quality muscle and lose fat while doing.. Gaining muscle requires a caloric surplus while loosing fat its the exact opposite.. Ive seen people do it at maintanence calories but they just had amazing genetics and also had just started out and they didnt gain a great amount of muscle either, Find out what works best for you, dont be scared of lifting weights and eat the propper foods, keep in mind that the muscle you obtain, the less fat you will have

Lifter here! There are lots out there who take it seriously, I just don't think you've seen them yet

I really hate those BS myths about toning and low weight and high reps etc. I see it quite often, however, slowly but surely things are changing and people are realising that you can lift heavy and not end up like Arnie!

    Look it like this ->
For building muscles you need a calorie surplus and you will gain muscles.
For dieting you need a calorie minus and you will loose fat and muscles (if you don´t train)

So yes you can build up muscles and loose fat. But the output is the difference. You will build up more muscles with a calorie surplus. When you dieting and weightlifting you will have a little weight loss and a little increase of muscle.

Because of this effect many bodybuilders bulking (eating a ****load of energy) and after they build a **** ton of muscles they are dieting + weightlifting.

    Cheers

The reason why you can't do both at the same time is because losing fat requires a deficit, and building muscle requires a surplus.

However, If you are obese, or new to strength training there is a chance you can do both - to some degree, for a limited time. If you are in either of those situations my advice would be to stay in a small deficit (TDEE -10%) and work hard on the lifting - lift heavy, push yourself (with good form of course) In the beginning you may notice a small increase in LBM (muscle) as your fat decreases. As I said before it'll be temporary and it won't be as much, but it's one of the benefits of being a newbie :)

If you go that route until you've lost all the fat you want. Then later on you can start looking into bulk/cut cycles if you want more muscle still.

Right now I'm lifting a spoon in my mouth at pretty high reps, does that count?

You can but only when you're new to lifting it's called noob gains. After though you'll just stay the same and barely change, it's prob better to either:

    A. Bulk if you're too skinny
    B. Cut if you are way too fat
    C. Go on a lean bulk if you aren't that fat

Yes but you have to train and eat for it, it doesn't just happen from lifting heavy. As a male you're at an advantage but women especially seem to think they will bulk up from their heavy weights, when they don't even have the right hormones for it, not to mention how many are actually eating in a surplus?

when i first started to lift, i noticed a good amount a of muscle gain without a lot of fat, i bulked for like 10 months and cut for like 1 or 2 months and got down to like 7bf... my second bulk wasnt so pretty due to the fact that i ate dirtyyyyyyyyyy as ****.. if your new your going to see decent gains because its a shock to your body, eventually you will just need to lift some HEAVY *kitten* WEIGHTS!

    Funny.

I'm on here all the time.

    I never see these comments.

It's usually LIFT HEAVY. It's practically a mantra around here.

Not that I disagree with it.

Very much a noob in the muscle gaining game, I'm a fresh two weeks in on SL 5x5. I'm already kinda bulky, on a calorie deficit ~1450+ exercise kcals. Won't my 3 days of cardio and 3 days SLs eventually reveal a "toned"appearance, broz (MN accent)? Last time i checked my LBM was around 105#, I'm currently #162 and have a large frame in my upper body. 5'4"

  • Okay, here is what I think you all are saying. . . first off I need to lose fat and I am overweight by 24 lbs. That said, I need to eat at a deficit and lift in order to avoid losing muscle while losing fat. I will have a tad bit of muscle gain at this time, but not much bc I am at a deficit with calories.

Once the fat starts to get at a reasonable rate ( I guess I will know when I have hit that based on looks) then I can increase my calorie intake and lift heavier and focus on muscle building. At this time I will be able to build the muscle which will burn more fat, is this correct?

I had always thought I needed to get near goal weight first before lifting. I think I had it wrong.
