Nervous about potlucks

I have 2 potlucks going on, one on Sunday at church ( let me tell you what, southern baptists EAT and I mean totally unhealthy lol) and another on Monday for a gal who is leaving.

In the past I would belly up to the table and get my food bag on, but not knowing how its cooked is freaking me out!!! I don't want to sit there on my phone logging each thing to see what it's worth, so I have to trust my gut. I am hoping and praying someone brings lettuce salad and I will bulk my plate with that and then eat MY food when I come home!

I know it sounds dumb, but I feel so anxious about the next 2 days!

don't stress - stress does worse things to your body than any fried food ever could

but it's pretty simple isn't it? generally you're not going to have many good options at a pot luck, but odds are someone will bring a salad of some kind. stay away from the obviously bad stuff like the obligatory bucket of KFC from that person who forgot about the potluck till the last second. If there are grilled or baked options, go for that, but if the only options are terrible, then just be smart and eat SMALL portions, and don't beat yourself up. you can eat great your other meals to compensate, and get back on the wagon full throttle on tuesday.

it's not the end of the world. :)

Quick question; what exactly is a potluck? Do you swap dishes or is it like 'everyone bring a plate and feast' kinda deal?

Forgive me, I'm Australian and have never been involved in one lol. I guess they're not a big thing here ;)

Edit: Also if it is a big sharing thing, are you able to bring something? If so, why don't you be the one to bring a big salad or Vege plate; then at least you're covered. Grab a few portions from other people's dishes then pile the rest of your plate with your salad ;p

Portion control and you should be able to assess whether it's a deep fried ball of grease or a cream sauce cheese laden mess. Pick the things that look best to you and fill up on the least objectionable foods. If you go over a bit, it's one meal. Eat less before or after, exercise more or just chalk it up to a special occasion.

Yes it's a swap so to speak. The one at work I was assigned a veggie tray so I feel better about THAT one. But at church I always bring a seafood pasta salad (everyone kinda guilts me into bringing it because its their favorite lol) I actually hate it, but it's not about me I guess ha ha!

You all are so right! I mean I have chips and dip, m&ms, and scads of other unhealthy stuff at my house (darn hubby) and I don't eat them. In fact, it's not even a temptation to me. I AM BIGGER THAN THIS! I can and will make good choices, eat small portion sizes and enjoy the friendships rather than make at all about the food.

Um...it is about you, at least in part. If you enjoy making this dish then do so but if it's time consuming or expensive then I would think twice about it. Share the recipe with someone else and they can make it next time.

There's no rule that says you can't also bring a salad or enjoy one at home before you go. Lots of chit chat and table hopping and you won't have much time to overindulge.

I always make sure to take a dish that is healthy and filling in case there is nothing that I want to eat.
