Where to Start?

I haven't worked out properly (consistanly) in 10 years. And I've gained a lot of weight in that 10 year span (I know, not a big surprise)... but, on top of eating healthy, I'm ready to get back to the gym. Problem is, I have no idea where to start. Not going to lie, I hate to run - hate it. Always have, even at my fitness prime (competitive swimming, weight training and resistance). Going to do it anyway, but I'd like to know the best alternatives.

Also, sometimes when I push hard, I get lightheaded and feel like I could pass out. What are some tips to avoid this feeling? (Specifically, when using the treadmil and similar machines.)

From experience - that lightheaded thing happens to me too. However, with me, that's a sign of dehydration and not enough food. So now I make sure I've had good food 1-2 hours before exercising and drink enough and it's improved it a LOT.

Before any exercise - see a doc maybe? Might be worth checking you out if you haven't done anything and want to jump into a full routine.
I'd say also get a basic HRM and make sure you don't get above the heartrate you should be while working out.

Start walking, not running, it'll get you fit in no time! Weight training will do loads for you (wish I had money for a gym!!!!). Cardio will really help with the fat burn, while weight training will help you build/tone muscles and lose fat also.

I started by walking. A lot. To schools, to shops, anywhere really whenever I could. Or just stuffed two smallest into the buggy and went for a brisk walk for half hour, then an hour etc. Let it build up.

Get back into the swimming pool if you love swimming. Just make sure you shower really hot after - swimming doesn't burn as many calories as you might think (sadly!) but I've read in loads of places that the feeling of being hungry after a good swim is because the body is cold and wants to warm up, so demands food! Hot shower helps with that

^^^ all from experience. I also throw in circuit training 1-2 times a week between the running and do kettlebells at home. So that's fun and changes things up!

HTH - above all, do stuff that's fun for you! xxx
