Lemon water in the AM

So I've heard from a few random sources that drinking a glass of water with lemon juice in it as soon as you wake up is supposed to be great for you... Is there any truth to this? And if so, why?
I've been doing it for a few days now, and the only thing I've noticed is that I seem to wake up faster. That might just be from the bad taste, though

Drinking 1 or 2 glasses of water as soon as you wake up gets your organs going. Not sure about the lemon but it couldn't hurt! Maybe add a little artifiicial sweetener to it. (unless you are anti-artificial sweetener). I make my own lemonade at restaurants like that.0

how soon after waking up are we talking about here? like the first 5 mins , or could it wait 40 mins til I get to work?
I have heard it is good for you as well but dunno why !0 -
I was once told that ice-cold water works best in the AM before breakfast. Not sure why, but hear that it "shocks" your body and helps you feel full.
No idea if there is truth to it, but I drink water in the morning and feel good0 -
From what I read...One thing is that it actually helps to balance ph, its alkalinizing and therefore it takes inflammation out of your body. I dont drink it every morn but have been drinking it all day today..It seems to give me energy and takes the swelling out.
Please use actual lemons and not the fake stuff in the plastic squirt. Thanks0 -

16 Health Benefits of Lemons:
1. Lemons are alkalizing for the body: Lemons are acidic to begin with but they are alkaline-forming on body fluids helping to restore balance to the body’s pH.
2. Lemons are rich in vitamin C and flavonoids that work against infections like the flu and colds.
3. Your liver loves lemons: “The lemon is a wonderful stimulant to the liver and is a dissolvent of uric acid and other poisons, liquefies the bile,” says Jethro Kloss in his book Back to Eden. Fresh lemon juice added to a large glass of water in the morning is a great liver detoxifier.
4. Cleans your bowels: Lemons increase peristalsis in the bowels, helping to create a bowel movement thus eliminating waste and helping with regularity. Add the juice of one lemon to warm water and drink first thing in the morning.
5. Scurvy is treated by giving one to two ounces of lemon juice diluted with water every two to four hours. In 1747, a naval surgeon named James Lind cured scurvy with fresh lemons. To this day, the British Navy requires ships to carry enough lemons so that every sailor could have one ounce of juice a day. In the past, lemons were replaced with limes; this is where the English got their nickname “limeys.” Watch this video: “Scurvy Pirates and the Lemon of Love”
6. The citric acid in lemon juice helps to dissolve gallstones, calcium deposits, and kidney stones.
7. Vitamin C in lemons helps to neutralize free radicals linked to aging and most types of disease.
8. The lemon peel contains the potent phytonutrient tangeretin, which has been proven to be effective for brain disorders like Parkinson’s disease.
9. In India, Ayurveda medicine values the lemon as a fruit and for its properties. It is sour, warm, promoter of gastric fire, light, good for vision, pungent and astringent.
10. It destroys intestinal worms.
11. When there is insufficient oxygen and difficulty in breathing (such as when mountain climbing) lemons are very helpful. The first man to reach the top of Mt. Everest, Edmund Hillary, said that his success on Mt. Everest was greatly due to lemons.
12. Lemons have powerful antibacterial properties; experiments have found the juice of lemons destroy the bacteria of malaria, cholera, diphtheria, typhoid and other deadly diseases.
13. Blood vessels are strengthened by the vitamin P (bioflavinoids) in lemon thus prevents internal hemorrhage. Also, making it useful in treating high blood pressure.
14. The symptoms of eye disorders, including diabetic retinopathy have been shown in research to improve due to the rutin, found in lemons.
15. Lemons contain 22 anti-cancer compounds, including naturally occurring limonene; oil which slows or halts the growth of cancer tumors in animals and flavonol glycosides which stop cell division in cancer cells.
16. According to The Reams Biological Ionization Theory (RBTI), the lemon is the ONLY food in the world that is anionic (an ion with a negative charge). All other foods are cationic (the ion has a positive charge.) This makes it extremely useful to health as it is the interaction between anions and cations that ultimately provides all cell energy.
Lemon Nutrition:
Lemons contain vitamin C, citric acid, flavonoids, B-complex vitamins, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and fiber.
Lemons contain more potassium than apples or grapes. Potassium is beneficial to the heart.

^^ from someone in medical school with a science background, most of that Google list is useless junk - the facts may be true, but lemons would only have an effect on you in these ways if you were severely malnourished- like scurvy! notice how nobody gets scurvy these days, almost everyone gets enough vitamin C. and extra vitamin C supplements have been shown to do absolutely nothing except make your pee more expensive. repeat after me: EXTRA VITAMIN C DOES NOTHING FOR COLDS. and your liver doesn't need "detoxifying." I am so so so tired of hearing that "detox" word- it's a ridiculous concept. The body detoxes itself all day long.
But that said, I do put lemon in my water in the mornings sometimes! I like the taste and it does have some diuretic effects in reducing bloat. A flatter belly always makes me feel better about myself even though it's artificial- ie. it's not actually reducing the size of my belly, just getting rid of a little puffiness. until I go eat some salt!0 -
Hi I have been having lemon in hot water in the morning now for 15 years, I was told to try this when I was diagnosed with Rhuematoid Arthritis. I find I feel better, my skin is better and I don't bloat as much when I have this, I have periodically not had it if I don't have fresh lemons and within 48hrs my skin breaks out. I don't know if it has helped my arthritis but at the moment I'm off all drugs to control it and am functioning and walking Ok. Some days are better than others but that's life. Try it and if it helps good if not stop.0

I started drinking hot water with a slice of ginger and the juice of half a lemon in the mornings about 12 months ago! I love it. I'm so very lazy though so I just squeeze the juice from the lemon into the cup and then drop the half in also so I get the flavor from the rind as well as the juice and the ginger. I honestly can't start my day without it. I haven't been sick in over a year either. I'm sure that's only related to my eating healthy and having a great immune system since I started this lifestyle change.
Oh.. also, I'm asthmatic and haven't had a need to use my meds, or had any allergy symptoms. I'm not sure it was due solely to lemons, but I will give them lots of credit .
No sweeteners and definitely NO artificial sweeteners.0 -

Most people don't take enough vitamin C to make any difference to a cold. They need to take it to the saturation point.
Do they tell you all this in medical school? Drugs not vitamins?
The liver can use nutrients from fresh lemon juice and cruciferous vegetables to make enzymes that it needs for detoxing.0 -
I don't know if it's true, but I drink lemon water all day long because it's damn tasty. It's certainly helped me drink loads more than I would if it was just plain old water.0

"detoxing" put off my mother in laws liver transplant for 9 years. Just sayin.0 -
