No Motivation

Feeling really down on myself lately, I just can not seem to get the motivation needs to excerise, and trust me I have all those same excusses my knee hurts, had to give up my zumba class do to financial issues and the list goes on, but without excerising the poor eatting follows and before I know it a week has gone by and I have done nothing I really need to find it again before I gain back all I have lost, I have already gained back 6 lbs.
I did buy a zumba video and I love going for walks, but I feel guilty taking time from my children where I work all day and I think my evenings should be spent with them, maybe once the snow finally leave and the roads are safe to walk on again I can take my children but not now.
I have thought about working out after they go to bed but have heard that you shouldn't work out to close to going to bed because it will interfer with your sleep, (see that gives me an excusse) does anyone have an issue with this?
Anyone have any suggestions?

I have the same problem, I have just joined up to a gym in Feb and then haven't gone for the last 2 weeks because I have been feeling so tired, and then look for an excuse! I always find that if I exercise in the morning before work, it makes me more energetic for the day and lifts my mood..It always makes you feel great to know it's out of the way too!
I get up an hour earlier then I would normally and make my way to the gym before work...perhaps you could do your zumba DVD before work and that won't affect your evenings with the children?
I hope you start to feel abit more positive when the snow goes away and you can start your walking again

What about switching around the workout time and trying to do your video prior to going to work?
If nights are the only free time, give it a try and see if you can sleep or not. I used to work out at nights and was able to sleep.
I hope you can find the motivation to get back on track, you don't want to backslide after losing weight! Stop thinking of everyone else and think of yourself first....you want to be the best YOU you can be for your kids, right??? A walk here or time for a workout isn't going to scar anyone. Remember why you wanted to lose weight to begin with and perhaps even write down reasons to help you stay motivated. I KNOW you can do this and get back on track!

you both have the same problem as I had. In Germany it called "Der innere Schweinehund"
First of all - you feeling tired and not motivated BECAUSE you are NOT working out !!!!
Second - I, for me need only 4 weeks where I must really knock on my will to workout. After that it becomes a habbit (for me - and I think also for you).
It will feels very stressfully the first 4 weeks. But when you do that you will like it and after that you will LOVE it.
You MUST WANT it... then everything will be as easy as sleeping.

Doing a morning workout is a good idea, I'm about to start doing that too, there's a really quick zumba abs video (am sure you can download it/find it on YouTube) that's only 20mins and it really works! I'd do that every morning and it knocked inches off my waist.
Also, if you do find that energetic exercise before bed keeps you awake then you could always do yoga or similar, it's still exercise, still burns calories but might set you up nicely for a good sleep.
It might sound silly but there's always opportunities to put exercise into your daily routine ie. calf raises when washing the dishes, 20 squats while the kettle is boiling, carrying the shopping with your arms held out in front of you (ok, only do this when no one else is around!!) etc etc.
Once you get going again, you'll notice that it soon becomes routine and you'll start feeling better on the inside and the out.0 -
I bit the bullet and started working out at 6:15 am. So far, so good. I don't skip nearly as much as I used to, mostly because I like the community at my box and also because I notice the difference it makes on my work during the day (I'm much more motivated all around).
It was tough at first because I have to get up at 5 to get dressed, packed, lunch made and out the door in time for class. Some mornings it really sucks. BUT, it's forcing me to be even healthier because I simply cannot go out at night, drink wine, eat a bad dinner or stay up if I'm going to be up that early.0 -
Hi, I just started this program today. One meal down and I used most of my 1460 calories a day. I'm 61, work 2 days a week in a nursing home, had bilateral knee replacements 4 yeras ago and walk approximately 4-5 miles a day at work. The first 3 months I wore a pedimeter. It takes me a 1-2 days to recover from work. I have a 4 disc neck fusion from 2 injuries and compression at C3 (neck). I lost 30 lbs on my own over the past 2 years but have stalled. To loose that weight, my water intake goal was 1 gallon a day and decreased my calorie intake by sight; i.e., 1/2 the food on my dinner plate, stopped rewarding myself with chocolate if I had a stressful day. I noticed when I didn't drink that much water and increased my caffeine intake, I started to stall. Don't get discouraged. I knew I needed support at this level. Needless to say, for me walking on my days off isn't top on my list. I have a treadmill upstairs that I use to wrap presents on. If you have ever seen old movies of city life where laundry is hung on clothes lines between buildings, got the picture. So sad. So I am enrolling in a yoga class this week. I did it before and still do some limited positions but I need to find a way to exercise when I'm off and share this goal in a public arena for support. I know, why do this job. Because I love it and Ican't sit anymore at desk jobs becaure of the compression. So try aiming for 1 gallon of water a day, and I mean try, for me it is a real effort. But when I don't drink water I feel like I have deprived my body of a very important gift. It is all in how you look at it. With my previous decreased weight goal I had broken it up in 10 lbs segments. I hope you find your own style. So look reward yourself today for seeking support by saying everything you think about yourself in a positive manner. I have a great personality, I am a very hard worker, I am a fantastic friend and etc. Allow youself to be human. You will meet your goal, even if it is a little at a time. Sorry for the book but I know you can do it.0

My wife feels the exact same way as you. Its hard for her to pull herself away from family for me time. I look at it as I want to be around for my kids and not dead, so I don't have any regrets about pulling myself away for an hour to work out.0

Motivation is overrated. All you have to do is find one thing to do today that is more exercise than you've been getting, even if it's only 10 minutes of walking, or doing some squats and push-ups while you play with the kids. You don't have to do everything you'll ever be able to do today. Just find one thing.0

For a few seconds, do jumping jacks, push ups, sit ups, weights (even just one rep), dance with the kids. Don't think you have to do 30 minutes of a good workout to get anything accomplished. The new studies are showing even 5-10 minute incriments are good. Mine are usually even smaller than that because I have been so unmotivated lately. I always feel better after I make myself do something!0

I wish I did have some great ideas, but I seem to be in the same boat. Except the fact that I don't have any children at home as my daughter is 33, I lost 12 pounds and have gained back 7!! I also had knee surgery and that was a fabulous excuse! lol I just want to get back on track, but I feel I have eaten so much junk food that now my body craves it. Maybe we could be weight loss buddies. I think I have to find some pictures of myself when I was thinner. That might help. Hope you get back in the groove, and if I find a great motivational tool I will share it with you!

I do a morning workout too. Of course, I don't have the option of ignoring or snoozing my alarm since my alarm is my 7 month old. But honestly it gets my day off to such a great start and I rarely skip it because I don't have all the excuses that crop off if I'm trying to do it later in the day.
My daughter is with me, but she's crawling around on the floor at my feet, or in her jumperoo and I'm making faces at her, etc. If I do have my other daughter, she joins in or plays around as well.
Snow is melting too, so we did a couple of walks this weekend and took the kids to the park (the long-way round so got a bit more walking in).0 -
i try to involve my kids ( who are 8 and 10) we play on the wii on the sports games or the dancing games. also like to play silly games with them like simon says eg simon says jump like a bunny, simon says touch ur toes etc can burn few cals just being silly with them and you dont miss out on time with them that way xxxx0

Sometimes it takes a life event to wake us up. I been going on and off of diets and exercise fads but this time it feels different. We are our best motivation. We all can tell you what to do or what we did but until you stop the negative thoughts and work through the pain it's always going to stop you. It's going to hurt and suck sometimes -- if it was easy we allll would be fitness models and mcdonalds wouldn't exist.
I believe in you darling!! You can and will overcome!

I just like you had no motivation until my doctor told me that I need to get my weight down. Guess what I took his advice and I am working on it. I have been working out almost every day for the past 3 weeks and I feel great. The days I don't I feel like complete crap.
When I get home from work I exercise right away to get it done and over with. It has helped too so far 3 pounds lost.0 -

Sounds like you need to workout in the morning. Motivation is a daily choice. Everyday make the choice to motivate yourself. Start at 5:30am and see how it goes.0

I am in a very similar boat with time restraints. I work full time, own a part time business, and have three small kids. I am not a morning person at all so I really despise the thought of getting up a whole hour earlier. Unlike most of the other posters here, I actually do stay up late and workout. I often don't start my workout until about 9 or 10pm. There have been a couple of nights where I haven't gotten to it until midnight. I eat a small snack afterwards and get ready for bed. I don't have trouble sleeping after. All of that to say, try it. You have to figure out what works for you. If nighttime workouts work, then do it!!0

It's easy to find excuses...been there done that!
Work out when the kids go to bed - it may actually make you sleep better. You never know unless you try. Or get up early and do it. Also - tons of free workouts on youtube!!! I love the Jessica Smith ones!! You can also get some Leslie Sansone workouts for free on youtube. I understand having kids and jobs....but honestly 1/2 hour workout in the comfort of your home will not scar them for life. Just do it!0 -

^^^ Wrong ^^^ Show me a lifestyle plan that doesn't emphasize physical exercise and I will show you a plan that WILL fail. Focus on deprivation and you will end up in the cozy embrace of mediocrity...longing to shove that next morsel into the pie hole. Spend your time earning your goals by taking an active role in your fitness and you can develop a much more fulfilling and healthy relationship with nourishment. There is nothing like dripping sweat onto a gym floor to help you focus on a healthier lifestyle.
Do not allow yourself to be lazy. Reject the excuses and procrastination. We all ache sometimes, we all have "no energy" from time to time. You need to break that cycle. People talk about energizing themselves through physical activity because it really works that way. What you need to do is push yourself. Do things you are certain you cannot. Do this, and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish. Trust in yourself, be diligent, be persistent, be brave, challenge yourself to be better, and you WILL succeed.0 -

You really don't NEED any motivation at all. All you have to do is walk around the block or skip rope for 5 minutes, 4 times a day. All the talk in the world about excuses and what I want never helped me. Moving my tushie whether I feel like doing a big workout or not, has been getting me moving for years.0

I totally get how frustrating it is when you know you "should" but somehow can't get yourself to do it.
Often external rewards can help (in the short run anyway) until the internal rewards of feeling good about yourself kick in!

I've organized the game around helping each other with strategies for reducing hunger pangs (like low-cal recipes that are filling, etc..)
