What can you do to improve your healthy diet?

I am taking a nutrition class and when I was reading my textbook I came to a realization that I am not eating as healthy as I thought.. Just because you are consuming the correct amount of calories to either lose, maintain or gain weight doesn't mean you have a healthy diet. Your body needs the proper nutrients to function. So what are 3 things you can do to improve your diet?

1. I don't eat enough fiber! I can do this by eating more fruits and vegtables.

2. I can improve my diet by eating more protein. It is recommended to eat meat 1-2 times a week but there are other ways I can add protein to my diet. I can eat grains (rice or corn) and nuts.

3. To improve my daily diet I will need to add more calcium to my diet. By adding this to my diet I can help prevent osteoporosis. I can drink one cup of milk a day and eat yogurt. If I cannot follow through on that then I will consider calcium supplements.

Maybe this will encourage you all to take a look at what you're not eating enough of!

I took a nutrition class last spring because it counted as a science, which is my least favorite subject. I was surprised at home informative the class was, for reasons just as you mentioned. I think that this type of class should be mandatory. I felt that it gave me more useful information than most of the classes that I have taken. In fact, this is one of the few books that I did not sell back and I often use for reference.

    I completely agree.

To better improve my healthy "diet":

    1. Spice things up and try new things: I'm getting better at this. Instead of just my usual celery and lettuce, I'm getting better at trying new veggies and fruits that I've never tried before - or liked as a kid. Asparagus. Some peppers. Tomatoes (almost). Pomegranates.

    2. Some more Omega power. Fish. Not a huge fan, but again, trying new things.

    3. Vitamins. Best absorbed by the foods we eat, I also try to remember to take a multi-vitamin once a day. I've noticed better feeling, energy, focus, and mood sometimes.

I took nutrition as an elective last year, and although I found most of it common-sense (consider what you're eating *and* how much, not just one or the other) I learned about a lot of interesting stuff as well (for example, how the quality of the food someone eats tends to go down with income before housing or other expenses, and that in my city a third of the people who use the food bank are kids under 18 years old... kinda sad, actually). One of the biggest lessons I took away from that class is that when I open the fridge and decide there's "nothing" to eat, I need to consider that I at least have access to food, and it's healthy (even if salad just isn't appealing).

Best thing you can do is eat only natural foods and foods you prepare! Get rid of processed junk, frozen and boxed food! Your body will thank you!

    1. I don't eat enough veggies. I get maybe 1 1/2 servings and need to aim for at least 2 but closer to 4. Been trying to get this with salads for lunches lately.

    2. I don't eat enough dairy so I fear for my bones! I have milk every other day it seems but I don't eat a lot of cheese or yogurt anymore...going to get back into the habit of that.

    3. Keep a steady intake of fiber. Some days I meet it, others I don't.

Ugh yeah I definetly need to eat more dairy too! I am not a fan of dairy products.. milk grosses me out.
