Snacking at Night

So I am 50, eating about 1600 calories a day, walking about 50 min a day for exercise. I don't want a fast weight loss, I want to change my eating habits for life. Here is my question, I am struggling with snacking at night. I'm not hungry, but I want to eat crunchy/salty things. Suggestions? Ideas? Other things besides chips and crackers that I can snack on? Thanks.

I like to snack on unsalted almonds no sodium, high in potassium, and full of healthy, hearty fats0

Are you in control of the food that comes into your house? If so, I recommend that you stop buying those tempting foods! My husband has a snack cupboard which I just don't open, so that could be an option too.
I am horrible when it comes to crackers and chips so I feel your pain!0 -

1) Save some calories so that when it comes night-time and you want a salty snack, you have the calorie budget to eat it.
2) It may help to look for lower calorie options to satisfy your craving. For me, popcorn is high on my list.0 -
Don't eat them if you are not hungry. The habit will get broken. And if you really want chips, weigh out a serving. You will be surprised how few chips it takes to have 270+ calories. That might just change your mind.0

I like the idea of a snack drawer for my husband. I but the majority of the food, but he will but chips and crackers. His diet is horrible.0

I like suggestions from both the other posters so far.
Also, try to substitute something that gives you the same "feeling" if you eat pretzels a lot, maybe sub in carrots with hummus. Also, have you ever had "Skinny Pop"? It is a all natural, no artificial popcorn, still gives me the satisfaction of having popcorn but not the bad kind you get from the movie theater.
Keep healthy things around, if you don't feel like snacking on something healthy, you won't end up snacking if that is your only option in the house.0 -
if you snack after 6pm, YOU GONNA DIE.0

Yeah, I do weigh them out, and yes, it's a small portion!0

Walk a little bit more so you can eat them.0

^^^ Lol
Carrots and humous, apple and peanut butter, Skinny Popcorn as already mentioned (big favourite), crackers and laughing cow light cheese spread (not sure which Country you are in, but you will have something similar) - only you can break the habit, it just depends on how much you want to x0 -

This.
Is the WORST idea I've ever heard.0 -

So militant. I eat about 600 of my 1800 calories a day after dinner. I haven't died yet.0

I've heard worse.
OP, you won't die if you eat after 6 or 7.
It's 8 or 9pm at the absolute latest.0 -
aip popped popcorn with a I can't believe it's not butter spray very low in calories gives you that crunch factor0

Which would work, it I haven't eaten about 1400 calories before snack attack sets in. When I go over, it's usually by about 200 to 300 calories. Since I"m eating close to my total calories burned a day, it's usually too much.0 -
shift your eating schedule, i'm the same way, only way it has ever worked for me is to start eating at noon0

By the way, I wasn't calling you militant...I thought I quoted the post that said, "how about just not doing it." We were in the car so I was on my phone. Anyhow, it is a learning experience. Try making your meals smaller or more low calorie and saving calories for the snacks later on. I usually start to get a little paranoid if I have logged breakfast and lunch and don't have 1,000 calories left for dinner and snacks. I am a night snacker for sure. I can rarely fall asleep if I am hungry and if I manage too, I wake up so hungry I might chew off my own arm.0 -
Snack on anything you want as long as you're staying within your calorie goal and hitting your target macros numbers. Time of day doesn't matter.0

LOL
Dont eat 3 hours before bed. A good healthy snack is a slice of a pickle. A slice is 0 calories0 -
Snack on roasted seaweed says an Asian.0

carrots and humus? hmm snap peas... pretzels aren't so bad... some almonds are also good (ill eat about 10ish and will feel more full) or just try and challenge yourself to avoid the night time snacking; drink green tea, or even drink some vegetable broth (10 cals for a LOT of broth). maybe have dinner a little later?0

Bolton always offers his pickle as a late night snack... sorry I had to go there.0
