Ok.........no drama, but I knew I could get your attention this way!!
When I started my journey on MFP I would say "I am going to eat better and exercise more, and if I lose some weight long the way then BONUS!!
I also wrote in my profile "When I die, I do not want it to be MY fault!"
Here is the BEST reason to set goals and stick with them today:
When I was admitted to the hospital last week, each and every nurse, tech, neurologist, cardiologist, nutritionist, and even a guy who mopped the floors (ok, I made that up!) asked me a series of questions:
How old are you?
Height?
Weight?
Do you smoke?
Do you drink?
What is your diet like?
Do you get regular exercise?
What is your BP? (the point was I should KNOW this)
Are you on cholesterol meds?
What is your chol level? (again, he said I should know this)
Do you have any idea how it felt to respond:
49
5'2"
135, BMI 24, fat a bit high and working on it
No I do not drink alcohol
I eat at least 3 veggies and 1 fruit a day, count my calories
I exercise 4 x week
I weight train 1-2x wk
My BP is perfect
I am not on cholesterol meds, Cholesterol is 187
From each of the medical personel, from the ER triage nurse, to the Cardiac Surgeon who preformed my heart surgery, each said I had NOTHING to do with my heart problem, it was there since birth. AND......AND...........all the things I had done over the past 2 years has probably prevented me from having some sort of 'event' (shiver..heart attack or blood clot or stroke) from this congential heart defect.
My test results were superb! (OK my LDL cholesterol is a bit high)
So the one think I looked forward to is NOT having a doctor say to me "Well, if ONLY you had ate healthier and exercised more..........." did not happen. In fact they said I would heal faster, and to even keep walking each day-albeit slowly-to keep me on exercise track.
What are your goals today?
Write a simple list. If you are just starting then shoot for "healthier options" on foods and drinks.
I would love to know how MFP has helped you with your health stats!!
have a great day MFP!!

Okay I have an embarassing question... what the heck is BP? Blood pressure? I don't know my blood pressure or my cholesterol....
I hate to hear that you were in the hospital but I think it's awesome that you can KNOW without doubt that the work that you have been putting it helped you and that there was nothing you could have done about your heart condition. There are so many people out there who essentially are putting themselves in the hospital (and in the ground!) and you can take heart in knowing that YOU are not one of them.
Congrats and keep up the hard work!!0 -

yes BP is blood pressure. it is important to know.............mine is normally low........so when they took my BP in the ER it was 110/60 and the nurse was saying I had a low number, I was able to tell her that was normal for me over my entire life-even pregnant.
The cholesterol is important because then they know if there is a bigger chance of arterial disease.
Thanks for the congrats........I love that everyone here is trying their best to get healthier!!0 -
Great Work, Jeannie!! You have every right to be proud of yourself!!! Keep up the great work!0

Jeannie,
First, I did not know you were in hospital. What in the world happened, if it is not too personal? Second, that is magnificant news about all the comments. I must say I love your sense of humor. Keep us posted on your post-op progress. It makes me even more determined to keep going. I always read your line about getting healthy and if I lose.... and thought that was right. In fact, since I loose so slowyl I have thought "what the heck, I am never going to loose weight" then I would think about your line and keep going.
Have a great day!!!!!

I was at a rheumatologist on Monday. I had surgery on my knee when I was 15 and then years over being obese have really messed up my knees. I have advanced arthritis in them. As the doctor went through the list of the " do you smoke, how much do you drink, do you exercise" questions, I can honestky say I faired extremely well.
She told me there was no point in sending me to a physiotherapist as I was strengthening my legs muscles just fine on my own. I will be getting orthotics which will make my walks even better! And I have anti inflammatory drugs for when I over do it.
Knowing that my weight loss makes it easier on my knees, I am going to work harder at getting rid of more weight!
Jeannie...I am glad that you will be ok. Just take it easy and keep up the great work0 -
Nice try, you little trickster--
You didn't answer your own "do you smoke" question?
Well, do ya? Huh? Do ya? Do ya?
If so, stop! it's not good for you.0 -

Linda........it is so worth it! Even with no weight loss (which WILL happen, no worries!) the insides of my body are cleaner and happier, and so is yours!
As for what happened:
I had what I thought was heat stroke or a TIA (kinda a mini-stroke with no signs of actuall stroke)
I went to the ER and they admitted me
I thought it was rubbish.........just needed some fluids and send me home.
But they kept running test after test.........I was thinking they may be at the end of their fiscal year and need to make a quota!!!
Turns out I had a congenital hole in my heart defect called a PFO (Patent Foramen Ovale) We all have it in utero, but it closes for 90% of the ppl at birth,or is so small it never is detected.
Mine was HUGE it turns out and it had a very high chance of leading to a stroke or heart attack. They went in through my veins in my legs to my heart, and placed a closure unit in the hole.
I am feeling great, all considered. Wow, to think just 5 years ago they would have cracked my chest open to do the same thing!!

Wow, Jeannie, that must have been a bit scary. You always have such a great attitude about everything. I am happy to hear that you are OK and will be fine! It is exciting to NOT be afraid to go in for a yearly physical. To know that when they check you out you won't have to hear any lectures about taking better care of yourself.
Loving it!!

BTW...we had a great time in Florida! the Gulf turned out to still be beautiful. It was hard to look at all of the birds and marine life and think of what is coming...so sad...so avoidable....Lord help us in our greed and consumption!0 -
I'm glad they discovered the problem and fixed it for you! Keep up the good work on maintaining your health.
My goals for this week (and the last several weeks) are: Exercise 500 calories at least 4X during the week, eat at least 4 fruits/vegs per day and drink at least 4 cups plain WATER per day.
My longer-term goal is to show my GP my weight loss at my physical in August. Last August he told me to lose some weight as I will be prone to diabetes from my mom's side of the family. I am now 2 or 3 years younger than she was when her diabetes was diagnosed. He suggested weight loss as the most effective prevention. I am already down about 15 lbs from when he saw me last year.0 -
Jeannie that is so scary! I am so glad to know that you are ok, and that they were able to repair the hole. I am curious to know what types of symptoms you were having? Not because I am worried at all about myself, but my dad had a small heart attack, and my hubby has started complaining about chest pain, so I am always on the lookout for knowledge of heart related issues.
BTW, my hubby was checked out about the chest pain. There is no concern over an impending heart attack, but his cholesterol is somewhat high and he has high BP that he's on meds for.0 -

 I smoked from 14-21 and quit 2 wks preg with my 1st kid. I thank God each and every day he removed that horrible plague from my body. I feel for the ppl who try to quit and cannot, and admire those who make the decision and stop on their own!0 -

oh I LOVED going to my GP follow up after I lost the 1st 10! He is usually a :indifferent: kinda guy....but not that visit  was his look!!
You will have to let us know what he says! He is going to LOVE it! Your making changes and healthy ones at that! WOOT!:drinker:
Those are great goals too. I am makign sure to add my fruits and veggies to each meal.0 -

Jessica, one of the things I learned was about the "Bubble Study" It is an echo that is done along with bubbles in the IV.......sounds deadly but it is not! That is how they found my defect. I have had full cardiac and neuro work ups over the past 5 years on more than one occasion for migraines, dizziness and shortness of breath. NO one found this......
SO ask..........it cannot hurt!!0 -
I just have to say I do not believe your first answer. There is NO WAY you are 49!!!!!!!!!!!!!!0

My idiot kid started. I can't believe how stupid the young people are who do this-- decades of history now of cancer-- it boggles the mind.
Really hope this kid of mine gets a clue someday-- sighhhhhhhhhhhhh.0 -
My daughter just started too. I thought she had more sense than that0

Especially when she used to complain and cry about her dad (my ex-husband) smoking. He has had a heart attack and now has cancer....do you think that would be a big deterrent??0 -

Only comfort is knowing their kids will "show" THEM one day-- I'll be enjoying it, be sure.0 -
Thanks for posting this! I am glad you are okay! I have to admit that I only know BP and cholesterol levels because I just gave blood... though I am fortunate to have never had problems with either of those (excepting the last week or so of pregnancy and I think that is okay!) The only thing I have a not good answer to is weight... and I am hoping to change it before I have to give worse answers to any of the others! Great job to you!0
