I do think you can be fit and still fat. I went to a fitness class with some friends last year (before my pregnancy when I was 50 pounds lighter) and I was able to get through it just fine while a superskinny friend of mine didn't make it through. I think that fitness level is so much more important than a number on a scale. I would like to be fit and thin though!

it depends on what you define as fat.0

I certainly think so. I mean there are limits. However, I DEFINITELY know people who I call "skinny-fat" because they're skinny, but have no muscle tone or physical ability whatsoever. My old roommate, skinny as a rail, would pull the "triple threat" many days a week (that's what I call fast food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner). While I have to watch what I eat very carefully or I will gain. Although he is skinny, I would never trade that for my ability to hike 10 miles or ride a bike 20 miles. I know it may sound vindictive, but one can hope time will catch up with him. Anyway, I definitely think you can be carrying extra pounds and still be in good shape. Likewise, the BMI index isn't totally accurate and different people warrant different circumstances.0

            Yes, to an extent.
I've known people who had some extra pounds on them, but had very good cardiovascular fitness & body strength.
I've also known skinny people who couldn't walk up a flight of stairs without gasping for air.0 -
You can definitely be athletic and muscular underneath a layer of insulation. That's usually been the case with me the past 10 years or so

well body builders are classed as fat due to their bulk. same on football players, some wrestlers. i wouldn't say any of them aren't fit.
i think you can be overweight and fit--there is a clydesdale category in our running club and some of them do marathons.0 -
I definitely think so. I have a complete physical done every year including blood work, etc. I am completely healthy to my Dr. other than my asthma holding me back from doing extreme exercises.
I know my weaknesses and limitations though.0 -

No no,,, bodybuilders are classed as Obese because of high BMI. They're not 'fat'.well body builders are classed as fat due to their bulk. same on football players, some wrestlers. i wouldn't say any of them aren't fit.
On show day they peak their fat cutting and dehydrate themselves and walk onstage about 3% bodyfat with the skin shrink-wrapped on showing every vein. Once in a while one of them dies onstage from it - - - dangerous stuff.
Fit fat - sure,,, lookit them gals that do the long distance cold water swimming. Swim the English Channel in the wintertime. Swim from Alaska to Siberia. $*%'in Walruses is what they are - well insulated and extremely fit. The one sport where women dominate men... :laugh:0 -
I can run a 5K in under 30 minutes and I weigh 192#. A friend of mine who weighs 130#, can hardly walk 5K before passing out. While I wouldn't consider myself "fit", I definitely wouldn't consider myself unhealthy.0

Some of the thinest people I know are "fat on the inside" and do not live as healthy a lifestyle as I do, even though I outweigh them.
I have to watch every single thing I eat and must exercise to lose weight & keep it off, which forces me to eat healthy. They, on the other hand, can eat whatever they want, and they do - lots of junk food, regular pop, not many fruits & veg, etc.
A lot of thin people I know smoke and like others here have said, they couldn't run up a flight of stairs of their lives depended on it.
All that being said, I would not consider myself at 5'3" and 170 lbs to be "fit", not until I lose more inches in my waist!0 -
            thanks for all the opinions.0
