My daughter got a virus on her computer and the only way to get rid of it was to wipe out her harddrive. My son-in-law reinstalled windows but we cannot get an internet connection. Before the virus she was using a linksys router that is connected to my husbands computer. My laptop is connected the same way. Of course I don't have the disk for the linksys wireless router anymore. Can anyone out there help me figure out what I need to do to get her connected to the internet. I might kill her if she doesn't quit pestering me to either fix her computer or let her on mine:bigsmile: . Thanks y'all

You can probably find the drivers for the linksys router online somewhere. I always lose my driver disks and they are normally on-line somewhere. Maybe you can find them on your pc and burn them to a new disk to use on hers?0

You will not need software for the router...
You are most likely going to need to get the drivers for your wireless card on your computer.
Do you know what kind of wireless card your computer has?
Does it show under Device Manager?
After that, you will need the instructions for your wireless router to follow on connecting.
It will also depend on whether your using any wireless security (WPA, WPA2 (AES or DES)) etc.0 -

You need them for the Wireless NIC on the laptop!
Tough part is figuring out what NIC you have internal to the computer. You can tell that from either paperwork, or looking at what type of computer and figuring out what type is installed on the motherboard.0 -
You could call the linskys tech support. Maybe they could help. www.linksys.com0

They wont be able to help until you know that the NIC on the laptop is working!
Once its up and functioning, the rest is an easy day!
The NIC most likely will have drivers and software (such as Intel ProSet - Wireless) to manage connections.0 -

buy a Mac! No virus'!!!!:drinker: :drinker: :drinker:
Wish that were true!
Just not enough market out there for the hackers to want to break it! ~smiling~
Though, there are some VERY decent Mac vulnerabilities out there to exploit!0 -

I can tell you this: I have always used Norton, McAfee, and various other "anti-virus" softwares to protect my PC's and have gotten such destructive virus' DESPITE these that I was forced to by new computers over and over, however, since I have had my Mac, I have NEVER installed ANY TYPE of anti-virus, firewall, etc. software and never had ANY problems!!!!!! So worth the extra couple hundred bucks!0 -

My job is Information Assurance! ~smiling~
http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=758 is a good article showing a comparison of vulnerabilities for 2007.
Just as important than Antivirus is to make sure you got to Tools>Windows>Update and patch the OS, IE, Office, Windows Media Player and ensure your using the latest version of Adobe, Java etc.
I love MACs for things that need processing power (Graphics, Sound editing, Cryptanalysis, Number Crunching) That is what the extra money is for. NOT security.
More often than not, a zero day computer virus comes out with no virus definitions and/or patch. Virus companies will update their definitions. Soon after, the OS/Program vender will create a patch/fix/version update. If people kept their things patched, they wouldnt ever get the virus! In managing networks with 5 to 10K computers, I would say that 70% of viruses are from known exploits (usually more than 6 to 12 months old).0 -

BTW - I would REALLY run some form of Antivirus on ANYTHING connected to the Internet! Especially without a firewall! Whether its Linux, MAC, Microsoft etc. You should put some form of IDS on your computer just to see how many times its enumerated in a day! Especially if it has a public IP address and not NAT'd behind anything at home.0 -
I'm zealous about keeping things up to date and have never had a virus. BUT my hard drive did crash once--when I tried to update to SP2 a few years back. Took me 3 days of sweating and working to get my computer back up but I lost everything.
Still love windows though--can't help it. Heck, I even love Vista! Just got a big enough/powerful system to handle it and it flies!0 -

Listen to the man... he right!!! lol
right click my computer then got to properties. Then hardware tab , and then device manager button
anything windows doesn;t have drivers for will be shown with a '!' in a yellow triangle.
If the items are onboard you can get drivers from the motherbord manufacturers site, if they are seperate cards etc you'll have to go to the their respective manufacturers site.0 -
Thanks everyone for the help, I really appreciate it as I am so computer stupid. :ohwell:0
