I was intrigued when I read the title of the artcle. I have to share it with fellow MFP'ers.

It took me 16 years to realize that Fitness is only 20% of the weight loss equation. Once that hit my brain, I am doing much better.

Padma.

Very interesting. However, the bottom line is calories in vs. calories out. If he had eaten less, than yes, there would have been a trend to a loss--even if he had eaten the same foods (just in lesser quantities). I'm not sure how he really "proved" that exercise is only 20% of fitness unless he meant that as a ratio of calories for the day. Eating the perfect foods all day will not make you more fit. If you sit on the couch while eating your perfect foods, you will not be better at running/lifting/yoga/etc. You need to work out to get fit!!

But it is always nice to have this put in perspective--but I wonder how much his "heaping pile of pasta" was?? That is an insane amount of calories to eat!!! Especially since it seemed the rest of the day was pretty slim. :ohwell:

Love the article. Yes, a trip to the gym is better than sitting on the couch, but it's not doing to "un-do" a pig out

This is an awesome article - thanks for sharing!

I think he was showing the most extreme of both worlds..........working out til you puke and eating til you puke (haha) - but still, good point. And actually one that my doc has stated to me before - working out is only about 10-20% of it. I'm a true testament to this - before my wedding I was working out about 45 minutes/ day - stairmasters/ treadmills/ bikes - but didn't really lose anything, because I still came home at night and ATE LIKE CRAP.

Another testament to this is my mom, who's been on WW since 2007 - she has gotten more active in the last year or so (she's walking a mini tomorrow!), but she contributes her entire weight loss in changing how she eats.

    Something to think about!
