Lately my addiction is not to food...

it is to my weighscale. Can't seem to stop obsessing about the numbers. I used to be a once per week weigher...and often that wasn't even at home...I would wait until I got to my TOPS meeting. Because I wasn't exercising and hadn't altered my eating habits, those weigh-ins didn't change much (up a few/down a few). But now since I have joined my works Biggest Loser competition and joined MFP to assist me, I have become obsessed with my weigh scale...I weigh myself 2 to 3 times a day.
Why is that bad??? Well for me it is making me depressed. 4 weeks ago when I first started this process of conscious/deliberate weightloss, I lost 10 lbs in the first 2 weeks (5 each week). Now I have slowed down...which I know is typical and I also knew that it was going to happen. But I am still working hard, not cheating (only once I did a teeny bit), and I am still losing (1.8 last week) but somehow that doesn't seem to be enough any more...I want more more more, faster faster faster. So I check my weight, and check my weight, and check my weight...and get more and more and more discouraged. At least the irrational part of me does...the rational part of me keeps reminding myself that the rate I am going now is a healthy rate, and is OKAY, and that this is not only a weightloss journey I am on but a lifestyle journey that I am on.
But still...that little square appliance in my bathroom keeps calling to me..."Come on...hop on...ya wanna know"

The scale is making you crazy. You gotta get it out of site. Put it in the attic for 2 weeks and focus on being healthier, not lighter.0

Throw the scale away! (or, if you cant throw it away, give it to a friend of family memeber to hang onto). Your obsession is not healthy and will drive you to places you do not want to go.
I used to participate in the BL contests at work too, but I found that everyone is too focused on the NUMBERS and not on becoming healthy. The last contest I participated in, a girl starved herself for 7 days so she would win. I dont want that to be me, and I dont want that to be YOU either.
Focus on what you are doing to change yourself FOREVER and not what the scale says. Its just a number that doesnt mean much. Listen to your body.0 -
Wow! 10 pounds in two weeks, that's fabulous! And still you're losing at least a pound a week?!? That is just incredible! I also tend to step on the scale a lot, but only once a day (in the morning when I'm at my smallest). I only count my weigh-ins on Mondays, though. I've discovered that weighing myself daily helps me keep myself honest, but I don't get down on myself, I just try to correct my mistakes, or if there's no movement on the scale, I up my exercise a little bit to try to get to the next level. I've been on MFP for about a month and have lost 5 pounds, and I'm really happy with that. I think maybe you should take a week vacation from your scale and see if you can break your addiction! Congratulations on coming so far, so fast!0

Personally, I don't use a scale very much. I haven't stepped on mine for at least 3 weeks. It was hard at first, because I was so obsessed with the numbers, especially when I reached a 4 month plateau (thats right, I was stuck for 4 months and didn't lose one single pound. plus side, i didn't gain any weight). But, I was doing everything right, so it didn't make sense. Weightloss sometimes doesn't make sense. But, the one thing that won't help if you are addicted to stepping on the scale is obsessing about it. Trust me
Been there, done that! So, I'm not a scientist by any means, nor am I some fitness consultant, or a nutritionist, or a doctor. But from my research I have learned that there are certain "thingys" that are sometimes released when we are stressed.... which sometimes causes our bodys to hold onto fat. I believe the word is cortisol? Hmm, anyways, I know that people are probably thinking "girl, if you don't know exactly, then don't be givin advice" but, have no fear, I didn't come here to give you the scientific reasonings. I would just advise for your own sanity reasons to dump that scale, break up with him for a while. You, know, tell him you need some time to think things out and figure out your true feelings
And then do something that is REALLY hard for us "i-wanna-get-fit-and-healthy" people to do....especially at first.... trust in yourself. Eat good food, the kind that gives you a good balance in your life- and by that, i mean you personally. And second, get yourself some exercise. If you truely are following a healthy lifestyle, and trusting in yourself to make good decisions, you shouldn't need that dang ol' scale to be there everyday, or every hour. You should feel confident that you can do this!! And you CAN!
For the most part, I use the way my clothes fit, and the inches lost as an indicator. Sometimes I'll step on Mr. Scale to find out how the last few weeks have been going, and double-check my sometimes unsure self. But, trust yourself and your eating habits and your exercise- and someday he'll be worthy of your presence
In the meantime, I would advise you, especially since you are recognizing your obsession with Mr. Scale, to step on him only ONCE a week. Do it at the same time of day, with the same amount of undies on (or none), and preferrably after a bowel movement (if that is typical for you at that time of day). that should give you a better idea of where you really are, since day-to-day weigh ins are hard to judge since our weight can fluctuate so much within one day. Good luck!! :flowerforyou: 0 -
yeah, what she said!!0

I've heard and read that your body weight fluctuates thoughout the day, so weighing yourself more than once is just going to frustrate you. Instead, appreciate what you have accomplished, it will be more mentally rewarding...and you deserve that, don't you? Give the scale some time off.0

Letty is absolutely correct! A person's weight fluctuates about 2lbs during a day - this is due to the food we eat and water we take in. I too was obsessed with the scale at one point - when you have such fantastic results in the beginning it's hard not to check your weight often, but in the long run it's going to be detrimental to your progress. If you're not seeing what you "want" to see you're going to get down on yourself, and you could turn back to food to make you 'feel' better.
Try to stick to weighing in once a week with your support team - it'll make that 1.8lbs lost feel so much better!!!0 -
I can't have a scale at home or I would do that too and it would not be good for anyone. I know for a fact that my weight changes upto 4 lbs from morning to night. I only weigh in once a week at my TOPS meeting and that is enough.
Good luck!0 -
My weigh in day is Sunday and I always tend to take a quick look on Wednesdays. If I see the same number or a higher number it always pushes me for the end of the week.
I don't cheat either and I have been working out regularly and have slowed down to about 1.8/week and I am fine with that. Just look at the big picture! :flowerforyou: But I know this is easier said than done.0 -
oh i know my dh bought me a digital scale and i would wiegh when i woke up, after i pooped, after lunch and before dinner!0
