Unable to exercise in apartment...

I've been use to exercising in my place but now the person living below me is being *sigh* annoying. I exercise usually around 11 am till noon.. No more because she keeps either calling the police or the office on us.. The office believes we are being fine but can't say much to convince our downstairs neighbor. Just doing stretching and ab workouts is not enough for me to lose weight.. I need somethign else that I can do at home with my little one..

What about boxing? Even just doing punches with your upper body will help and can get your heart rate up.
Hula hooping. Going outside and jump roping. Yoga. Handstands (against a wall). Basic bodyweight exercises (pushups, squats, etc).
Another suggestion is to talk to the apartment office to send HER a letter explaining that what you are doing isn't wrong.0 -
i do a kickboxing dvd (10 minute solution bootcamp) which has sections that are mainly punching or kicking without too much jumping. i definitely get a cardio workout doing punches, and you can hold dumbbells too (or a tin of soup!)0

Many strength training workouts can be done without much jumping. Pilates, yoga are good choices too.0

Get outside! Doesn't your complex have a playground? Many great body weight exercises can be done on a child's playground. Looks like it's time to get creative!0

Fitness blender has a quiet cardio workout just for you...look it up on youtube...it is great & rigorous!0

Have you tried just talking to them and explain and saying that you just need that one 1/2 hour per day? Or, perhaps if there is another convenient time? Boo for them for being such a pain in the butt about it.0

Tough, they['re being a pain, it's hardly unsociable hours, the apartment managers have no problem with it, your neighbours will have to suck it up.0

I'd do one of three things.
1. Ignore your downstairs neighbour and keep working out. Neither the police nor the office are going to do anything about someone exercising in the middle of the day.
2. Start working out between 11pm and midnight for a week so that she's relieved and happy when you switch back to 11am.
3. Think about of getting out of the house with your little one. Strap them in a stroller or baby carrier and start pounding the pavement.
My internal bada$$ says to do number 2. My internal sane person says do number 1. My keep-everybody-chilled person says do number 3.0 -
Doesn't your state have a law against making unnecessary police calls? I'd consider legal action if your neighbor is insisting on being that belligerent, especially if your property manager has no problem with you and it's all lying on the neighbor.
That aside, I live in an old house w/hardwood floors (so, very creaky and walls are thin) and I use a mini-stepper from Sunny Health & Fitness I got on Amazon for like $55. Threw a carpet square from one of the local flooring places under that and BAM. My landlady lives below us and she can barely hear a thing unless my clumsy self falls off the thing.0 -
Your not doing anything wrong, i would just ignore them, and if they keep it up report them to the building manager.

I used to live in an upstairs apartment. I bought mats (the ones used just in case you drop weights) to help negate some of the noises I made while working out P90X or whatever it was at that time.0

Actually 80% of your weight loss will be from your diet, so don't count on what you can do making a big difference. That said there is always going outside for a brisk walk or jog which would be great for your little one as well to get some fresh air. Other suggestions of boxing or weight lifting are good as well.
If the office has no problem with what you are doing have them send her a letter stating that you are not in violation of any building rules and that you will continue your routine. I can't believe the police even come out for a noise complaint in the middle of the day. Around here it could be 3 am with fireworks going off and they won't show up.0 -
NerdFitness.com has some great body weight exercise routines that may work for you. Possible just skip the jumping jacks and burpees and such which may be loud.
Or could you try getting a mat or rug that may muffle the sound?0 -

Here's a question: When you started working out in your apartment fully knowing that you are on the second floor and you have a neighbor below you did you even approach the downstairs neighbors, tell them that you are going to be working out in your apartment from X time to X time and that there will be jumping and noise and would they mind.
OR
Did you just think "Screw them! This is MY apartment I'll do what I want!" and just go at it?
If you did the former and they said ok and are now complaining then I'd go join a gym or move my workouts to outside. If you did the latter then you really have no grounds to be mad at them for calling the office and I'd go join a gym or move my workouts outside.
Honestly if I were a downstairs neighbor and I heard a bunch of ruckus going on upstairs (and you didn't tell me what you were doing before hand) I'd be a little po'd too however I'd probably speak to you before I went to the office.0 -

She called the Police? That sucks. Is there a way to set a scheduled workout time she can live with? A time when she will not be in her place? I might be dreaming here, but I'm hoping she can work out some type of plan with you.0

Brazilian Butt Lift by Beach Body is a good apartment workout- there is a lot of dancing but its not high impact so you don't have to sweat your neighbor complaining about a bunch bumping around.0

You can buy a pad or mat to exercise on. I have one that is about 1/2 thick and works somewhat well with jumping. Also, try to land like a cat. It actually is harder and a better workout I think to jump and land without a huge thud than just jumping high and crashing down.0

You are not doing anything wrong, keep doing what you are doing. I believe in being considerate to others under normal circumstances but not in tip-toeing through life to placate somebody's quirks.0

Get a 12" sub-woofer. Put on some Skrillex dub-step at high volume and start doing kettle bell routines, see how they like that.
Seriously, if you are doing it mid-day then they need to STFU and go get a job. It's part of apartment life. If you live under people you are going to hear noise. Let them keep calling the police... in the end THEY will be the ones in trouble for calling them constantly for no good reason.
BTW resistance bands are awesome if you MUST be quiet.0 -
Can you talk to them about if there's a better time? Maybe they work 3rd shift and if you worked out in the evening it wouldn't bother them. If they don't have a time and any noise bothers them, then they should not be living in a lower apartment. If they are just being unreasonable and will not compromise, continue to do what you do until the police get sick of responding to the person.0

When I lived in a first floor apartment, any noise during the day didn't bother me. I only complained (multiple time) to the office when loud music was played after midnight (which was a violation of county noise ordinance). And, trust me, I had to call a lot. The office ended up kicking those people out because they kept getting calls from me, they had been warned, and kept violating the rules.
IMO: You are doing nothing wrong. Look up the county noise ordinance and if she continues to complain, tape it to her door or hand her a copy (maybe along with some cookies). I doubt she realizes that those things happen when you live below someone. And getting po'd when you're doing exercises during daylight hours in the middle of the day is ridiculous.

We don't know anything about her neighbor's situation. Maybe she works nights and is trying to sleep during the day. I know plenty of people who are trying to get sleep from 11am-noon because they work overnights. Why don't you talk to her and ask when would be a good time to do your exercises instead of engaging in this war of attrition? If she says no time works, then screw her. But maybe she will be perfectly amenable to figuring out a time where she won't be bothered.0

There's a lot to be said for being considerate of your neighbor's right to quiet enjoyment of their apartment. I have a bike mounted on a very quiet fluid trainer and it sits on top of a 3/4 inch rubber mat. The mat weighs over 100lbs and I bought it before I started using the trainer which tends to vibrate quite a bit. I even bought a slick tire so that there's no rumbling noise when I'm on the bike.
A lot of condominiums and apartment buildings require that a certain percentage of floorspace be covered by carpeting. This is to ensure that downstairs neighbors aren't disturbed by footsteps and things falling on the floor. It just seems to me that doing jumping exercises without some sort of thick padding is a bit much.0 -
I lived here before she did and was doing my routine all along. When she moved in she was informed that there was some one above her and with a young child.
She now been calling the office every time my son drops a toy (even at 7pm).
I am looking for a house come next summer.
But thank you for all the suggestions.. I like the idea of boxing, always have. And with the warmer weather setting in, I will be out then. I just ahve to survive indoors during the cold..0 -
I live in a house and the basement is rented out.. hardwood floors creak a lot upstairs.. I got connect-a-mats (like the ones you see in daycares) sometimes I double them up to really stop the sound.
Your neighbour is crazy though.. I bet the cops don't like coming to deal with her calls. How is the management where you live? I'm sure they are sick of hearing from her too.. Just keep at it, try the mats and persevere.. like I mentioned, people will get sick of your neighbour. I mean, IMO, don't live in an apartment building if you can't handle occasional movement by your upper/lower neighbours.0 -
When my kids are asleep I don't want to jump around too much so I use a Jillian yoga meltdown dvd. There is no jumping and I find it works pretty well for a good workout. Getting out for a walk is nice when the weather is good as well. I hated apartment living. We decided to always be the one on top after a year of living below some very loud people. We were also in a basement and the basement flooded when the plumbing stopped up. It was our first apartment after being married and within the first week we had to have people extract water/sewage and clean the carpets. Good luck with the new lady living under you.0
