I have been on here about a month and a half. In that time I have lost 5 pounds (that's great as far as I am concerned). Yay me, LOL! I have wanted to lose weight for about a year and nothing was happening.

Before, I joined this site I ate very healthfully and drank a lot of water. However, I thought back to a documentary on TLC...the 700 Pound Man, I think it was. He said something to the extent of "Even if you eat too many oranges you can still gain weight". At that moment things became some much clearer. I was all about low-fat. Yet, a calorie is a calorie and not all fats are bad! I have learned this from research and from this site. It is still a work in progress, but the proof is in the pudding...

TOOT TOOT! <--- that is me tooting my own horn, hehe!

So, as you pursue fitness, great nutrition, and weight loss, what have you learned? I am not talking about what the "gurus" say. I mean what has worked for you? The tips and habits that are assisting you in meeting your goals? TIA!

I have learned to toot my own horn too! I think that I have always "known" what to do...I just found a bazillion excuses not to do them.

Great post! And your picture is beautiful!

Anyway, I have learned (after getting back on the wagon two weeks ago) that I get full quicker and STAY full longer if I eat no processed foods. My cravings have significantly decreased and it is easier to stay at my calorie goal if I eat whole, natural foods. I don't know that I am losing faster, but it does seem to be easier. Now I hope I haven't jinxed myself!
  • I have learned that it's going to take time to lose the unwanted lbs and inches but I am worth all the time I need!! So I am now appreciating the little changes and not beating myself up anymore when things go wrong.

I also have learned that eating clean and healthy has improved my skin!!!! My face is much clearer:happy:

I have learned that it isn't all about staying under my calories for the day - it is important what those calories are made of. I do better when there is more protein & fiber in my diet than when there is a lot of sugar going on (no matter where the source of it).

I have also learned to celebrate every single pound lost. This is a marathon, not a sprint.

I have learned to look at exercise as something that I GET to do and not something I HAVE to do. This change in perspective has made me appreciate all the things that my body can do and has helped me to cultivate a respect for myself that I'd never had before.

Yes, this journey to a healthier self has transformed by body, but I am more amazed at how it has refined my mind.

I have learned that I have so much more energy when I eat properly and exercise. I had a terrible day of eating yesterday and all that did was make me feel lethargic so I didn't exercise. It is almost like a hangover! I am going to try to remember that feeling I had yesterday to push me through the rest of my journey.

    Thank you!

So far we have eating clean, and appreciating the small changes. Eating "clean" is still a bit new to me. I am working on continuing to increase the whole foods that I eat. I try to go by that cliche..if your grandmother or great-granmother would not recognize it as food, don't ear it! That helps a lot...nothing neon orange should be eaten, lol!

It can get very frustrating when you want to lose a lot of weight and it is coming off slower than anticipated. I always have to remind myself that it will all add up in the end.

Another thing that I have learned is there is no point in trying to work out for 90 minutes if I am only going to give half effort. A good 30 minute workout that I give my all to is much better in the long run.

Yes, we are our WORST critics! A lot of times I would point out my own flaws, before someone else could. Like the fact that my hips would always bump the walls in the house when I turned corners. So toot on everyone...the good toot not the stinky toots...

I have learned to not only monitor and limit my calories but my sodium intake and to identify and avoid trigger foods. For me that is breads. I've also learned that apple cider vinegar curbs carb cravings. You can read about it here:

I have learned (accepted) something a skinny bean nutritionist told me about a year ago... which was:

Don't eat on the days you don't exercise.

    I now take that as:

We wake up every morning knowing we will eat. We will consume calories. BUT what if you woke up every morning knowing that we would exercise too! You have to be active in order to be healthy.
  • I've learned that PERSISTENCE is the key!

In the past, I would start exercising & eating right; THEN I'd start back making my late-night trips to Taco Bell & getting loads of waffle fries @ Chik-fil-A. It was a never-ending cycle.
I became serious when I notice I had reached an all-time high in my weight spikes (179 lbs!) I'm 5'1, and that just wasn't acceptable... So, I've learned that being persistent & committed yields the best results

I have learned that I don't have to give up everything I love to lose weight, just eat less of it and less often.
