Butt Assistance

I'm sitting outside on cold concrete steps this morning watching my dog play. I get up to go inside and I feel something cold on the back of my legs. I realize it's my *kitten*. I've lost about 72lbs over the last 9 months, and I'm currently trying to figure out my new goal. I've done this primarily by cutting my calories way back, and walking, working my way up to jogging/running. I know there are exercises that can help tone, but here's my deal. One of the consequences of letting myself get so fat (---> 5'11", and 258, down to 186 as of today) is that I totally blew my back out. The last two discs in my lower lumbar are completely herniated, with the surrounding discs starting to "go". My Dr. told me I have Osteoarthritis. I have this in my knees pretty bad as well. I've been helping the knees a TON by being careful what I eat, and walking, jogging, running. How can I help the rest of my body without hurting my back? My Dr. suggested physical therapy, I went for a few weeks, and have tried to continue what they showed me, as far as strengthening my core, but what about my flabby butt? Any tips would be helpful. (And no, I can't go get Jason Biggs "Saving Silverman" butt implants.)

I'm not sure how bad your knees are, but I find wide stance squats are easier on my knees while tightening up my butt. This one might be a surprise, but hula hooping is also really good for your core and your butt and thighs and is easy on your knees. It works your obliques a lot and the muscles on either side of your spine which should help support your spine. It also increases spinal flexibility.
  • i too have atleast 2 herniated discs. one i got moving furniture 6 weeks prego and couldnt even function until i was about 35 weeks along! its awful ive had my first herniated disc since 14 years old so its been 9 years of pain. to tone my tush i started doing these leg lifts i found on fitness magazine.com i think, it was the victoria secret workout for your butt... i happened to find on pinterest.. and ive noticed a difference from doing it a few times a week for a month :0) its easy on the whole body u lie on your side bend your knee closest to the ground, and put your opposite leg out in front of u, flex your foot and lift up and down about 15 times then put your leg straight so your body is a straight line, lift 15X then put it slightly behind u and lift 15 times. then switch sides. it burns by the last rep :0)

I've had a herniated disc in my lower back for many years, and squats actually help me when it acts up. Those and lunges are great for the butt!

Strengthening my back and legs via barbell training with heavy weights did a lot to alleviate my back and knee discomfort from my obesity though it hurt a lot at first. I would suggest setting up an appointment with your physical therapist and learn some leg and back exercises that you can do to help strengthen those areas. Strong muscles will help stabilize your lower back and joints.

I've seen a lot of changes in my butt thanks to squats and lunges.

I'm in the same boat you are in, almost exactly. I am just under 6' tall and currently weigh 225 lbs. At my highest weight, I was 325 lbs. I have osteoarthritis as well with the worst degeneration in my knees. Particularly, my left knee as I tore the ACL and PCL trying to learn how to ride a bike when I was 27.

Squats and lunges are hard. I know the form is not right. Particularly, when I bear weight on my left knee from the lunges. But I tell you, they help in more ways than you might think. I used to have some serious problems with my knee 'slipping'. Arthritis sufferers will know what I'm talking about. It feels like the cartilage moves out of the joint and it hurts and can't really bear weight. Since I've lost weight it improved, and since lifting, it hasn't happened at all. I do still hear the crunching and crackling noises in my knees, and my PT said that is damage occurring to the cartilage, and occasionally I have to take a break from lifting due to inflammation. But for the most part, I think the squats and lunges are helping more than they are hurting.

*edited to add - I still don't know how to ride a bike. After that, I lost the desire to learn completely. Long story about why I didn't learn when I was a kid.

*edited also to add - I overlooked your herniated discs. I would check with your doc and PT before pursuing my advice. My stepdad had herniated discs that eventually deteriorated completely so please be careful.

I used to go on about how I had bad knees... since doing squats and lunges with good form, knee problems are gone. I've also heard a lot of people say that doing squats improved their knee health as well. Squats with weights will help tighten that area and lower back up nicely.
