Albuterol.........Help?

I have asthma. I use my albuterol only occasionally. I do not think it has any effect on my weight one way or another.

Yeah albuterol would help! Speeds things up for sure. Many times people on an inhaler are also on a steroid. I wouldn't be surprised if they were also taking an oral steroid for pulmonary issues.

A few things...

* Speak to your doctor - don't take advice on a forum! Yes, we have experience (I have asthma and use two different inhalers as well as other medication) but it should not be a substitute for seeing a clinician. Your case is individual and we cannot give you medical advice.

* Albuterol will not cause weight gain (this one relieves the symptoms of asthma when you have an attack).

* You might be confusing it with another type of inhaler, which is used to prevent rather than relieve asthma. These contain steroids but, again, do not cause weight gain (most preventers are based on corticosteroids, which are completely different from the anabolic steroids sometimes used by bodybuilders and athletes).

* My thought is that your friend's weight gain was co-incidental. Did they stop exercising, perhaps, due to fear of an asthma attack?

* I would absolutely urge you again to see your doctor. Not taking medication when prescribed it for asthma is downright dangerous. I would also wonder whether you need the medication in the first place as if you genuinely had asthma then you would have little choice but to use the inhaler. When it comes to fear of getting fat or not being able to breathe, there is no choice. Maybe it's time for a medication review and a reversibility test to make sure you do actually have asthma and whether the medication you have is right for you.

as some one who suffers from asthma- breathing is much more important to me than my weight. I'd much rather have the capabilitiy to breathe than wear a bikini. But hey-- to each their own.

Albuterol won't cause any significant weight loss. But surely won't make you gain it either.

:flowerforyou: Breathing is kind of important! An asthma attack is incredibly distressing but I've found exercise has helped me massively (particularly intense cardio such as running and climbing). But I still always need to have my inhaler with me.

I have had an inhaler for about 15 years and have to carry it with me everywhere. It will not cause weight gain. Neither will the steroid inhaler. I am on a steroid as well, and it sure wasnt the puffers that caused me to gain 30lbs. I was on prednisone once for a bad asthma attack, and was warned that I could gain weight from it, but I honestly dont remember if it did or not. I was more concerned with my lungs. It was the beer, pop, chips, hot dogs, etc etc etc, coupled with little activity that caused me to gain.

I too would prefer to breathe over losing a few pounds anyway.

Not true. It is a very small dose directly to the lungs and there is little evidence of weight gain as a result. Are you confusing it with steroid tablets? If so, please don't post info that is factually incorrect unless you know for certain it is true.

corticosteroids - the clue is in the name, they release cortisone which is a stress hormone known to cause weight gains. Albuterol does not have this effect however.

OP I recently got a sabutamol inhaler after not taking any inhalers for a few years, the first night I felt incredibly hungry but since then have not had a problem. Some people take albuterol to suppress appetite when trying to reach low bodyfat levels. It won't make you gain weight.

Steroids- prednisone, solumedrol, etc - can cause you to gain weight. Rescue inhalers ie Albuterol, should not. And even if they did, you should never be using a rescue inhaler enough to where it would cause weight gain. HTH :-)

I am,but I wont give medical advice on the internet, except to say talk to your doctor, and if you are prescribed a drug, then it was for a reason and you should use it as indicated. If you feel like it doesn't work for you, your doctor may be able to prescribe an alternative medication that fits your lifestyle better. There are tons to choose from.

That being said, seriously on a personal note, google what albuterol is, and some of it's side effects. Do they sound like something that would make you gain or lose weight, or neither? hmm.... Also, talk to your doctor.

Does using an Inhaler make you fat? I rarely use my inhaler cause I always fear it would make it hard to lose weight. One of my best friends was EXTRA skinny and after she started taking the albuterol she gained 50 pounds.........I'M SCARED!

Oh and I have asthma thats why ^^^^^^
