Getting pants taken in?

Hey guys and gals! So... I have a favorite pair of work pants, and they're still good, but they're starting to look silly around the thighs because of how roomy they are now (good problem, right?). But, see, I love them, so I was thinking about taking them to a tailor to have them taken in.
Has anyone done this? Was it successful?
Because the stuff I've taken in myself has mostly been a hot mess, but that could be because I am terrible at sewing.

I had a closet full of work pants taken in. 75% survived. It was a lot cheaper than buying 75% of my closet in new work pants.0

You spend a lot of time in your closet.0 -
If you love the pants and would continue to wear them, it's worth getting them taken in.0

Most tailors don't recommend taking them in more than 2". If you got more than that to take off, find a new pair and congrats on your NSV!0

I did not lose very much weight. Just about 5 pounds, but anyway, I did go down 3 sizes (maybe because of weight lifting or maybe because I'm short or maybe both). So, I got rid of my clothes that were old. But, I had just bought a pair of pants. The day I bought them I took them to the tailor and had the waist taken in because they fit me, but were gaping at the waist. But, then I still lost 3 pounds, and they were so loose on me. They no longer looked good. So, I took them to the tailor and they were able to take them in all down the side of the hips and thighs (making them 1 to 2 sizes smaller). Now they fit me perfectly again.
I just remember when I was getting married I bought a dress on sale that was maybe about 4 sizes too big (gigantic on me), and the tailor said he would not be able to make it a perfect fit because it was just too big for that. He took it in, and it fit, but it was always a little loose on me and not a great fit. I wasn't very fashion conscious back then, though.0 -
i've gotten to the point where i can't AFFORD to keep buying more pants for work! easy way to take in slacks....
at the back seam, tuck about half an inch of the waistband and line it up with the seam (you can do this either behind the seam or on top of it. either way, you get a decent pleat.) pin in place. do the same for the other side. try on the pants and adjust them as needed until it is a comfortable fit.
for stitching, only focus on the top edge of the waistband, attaching the folds to the seam. i use a simple knot when i do it (thread pulled through to start a new stitch, then loop the needle back through the stitch before pulling it tight. you don't get as many bunches that way.) if you want to make it more secure, you can stitch together where the two folds run along each other and close up the pleat, but it is not always necessary.
as your waistline drops, you can also take in the sides in the same way...just keep it pleated along the seam. i have ONE pair of dress slack that has been taken in three times in this way, and they are still presentable. when you move on from the slacks, the knots come out very well (try to keep the stitches as close to the edge as possible to hide them and no one will ever know if you happen to resell!)
hope that helps a little.
(ps. you could probably still take them in to the tailor, though. i'm just really cheap, so i do my hems, seams, and patches on my own. ^_^ )0 -
I had a few expensive suits taken in. Sorry I did it. The tailor didn't want to do it and I should have listened. I bought an entire new wardrobe. Well worth it. Donated everything in my closet.0
