Gym routine

Hey everyone,

I don't know about you but I've been really struggling to keep to 1200 calories a day... especially as I've also just joined the gym and I find I crave carbs afterwards - is there anything I can do to counteract this?

My aim is to go to the gym every other day and so far I've done it 4 times in the last week but I'm not really sure if my work out is really ideal? I've been doing 30 mins on the treadmill (i'm doing the couch to 5k training programme), 15 mins on the rowing machine and 15 mins cycling. I want to lose weight so i'm healthier but also tone up - any suggestions?

I'm 10.3 stones and 5"6

    definitely add strength training. And make sure you are eating your exercise calories

    Yes, if you're gym has some sort of weight circuit you should incorporate that into you're routine every 2nd day.
    Usually when you sign up to the gym you get an orientation and they show you how to use the machines.

    Alternate cardio and strength training to lose weight fast, get toned and kep metabolism spinning faster and longer. Compound lifting and circuits/spinning for example. Do some classes as a great way to get into the exercise groove and learn what to do without a costly personal trainer. Eg. Body Pump is strength training but toning and endurance based.

    I'd echo what jenlhugg said. Strength training has lots of benefites including strengthening bones and raising metabolism. Lucoazde have brought out a lite version at only 50cals which is useful to replace a few carbs electrolytes during/after training. Your body will adapt very quickly if you keep doing the same workout, so vary your intensity and machines. Body pump is great but quite intense if you're new to training. Spinning classes are excellent as is circuit training, just keep going and vary your routine. As for carb craving, it best to eat (rice cakes, protein shake, lucozade light) within 30minutes of finishing your workout, if you wait your blood sugar will drop and you will REALLY crave bad food choices.
  • Thanks everyone, thats all really helpful. I'm a little scared of the group classes as I have no stamina whatsoever but i'm going to brave it next week :)
