Protein Powder / Meal Replacement

Hello! So im a full time college studen and work about 30 hours during the week and I don't always have time to cook breakfast in the AM. I don't particularly like cereal because of all the sugar etc. Does anyone know of any good powders for meal replacements that doesn't have to much sugar and carbs?!!

I know you are wanting protein recommendations but since you mentioned not eating cereals due to sugars I'll mention this anyway. Not all cereals have a lot of sugar. Here are a few that are very low in sugar and still taste good, (at least in my opinion):

    Cheerios, (my favorite) 1g sugar
    Bran Flakes 5g sugar
    Shredded Wheat 1.5g sugar
    Kashi Go Lean 6g sugar
    Grape Nuts 5g sugar

FYI watch the glycemic index of many of the above ... modern cereals, regardless of "sugar" content, are still highly-refined carbohydrate and many have a much-higher glycemic index than table sugar. This is why many people, especially when losing weight or watching their triglycerides, avoid these refined carbohydrates.

Table sugar, fyi, depending on brand has a glycemic index between 61 and 68. The glycemic index of all the cereals you mentioned are higher than table sugar:

    Cheerios: GI of 74
    Bran Flakes: GI of 74
    Shredded Wheat: GI of 75
Kashi GoLean: (GI un-tested in current lab availability)
    Grape Nuts: GI of 71

The moral of the story: Just because something is low in added sugars doesn't mean it's good for you. The carbohydrate in modern cereals is refined/processed to make it just as bad (sometimes worse) for your body than pure sugar, gram for gram.

As for protein shakes: I try to find isolates such as Kaizen Whey Isolate or Iso Sensation 93 that are 93% minimum protein by content. Then I mix them with full-fat cream, a little water and sometimes some berries for a high-protein, low-carbohydrate yet anti-oxident-rich full-calorie breakfast that I can make and drink in 2 minutes flat. It's much cheaper than any ready-to-go product.

My breakfast consists of a big, fat whey shake. I mix it with skim milk and add in a banana and some frozen berries. Fills me up to the brim!

If you have time to make a protein shake then you have time to throw some eggs in a pan.

Or get up 5-7 minutes earlier. Everyone "has time"

I actually take the powder with me to work and keep my almond milk in the office fridge and mix it up here while I'm brewing the office coffee. Not to mention I'm not hungry right when I wake up, it takes my body about an hour to wake up and for me to be hungry, but thank you for your attempt to help.

I found body logix which is all natural and it has 32grams of protein. You can mix it up with just about anything and I love it. Its quick and easy. Its also not as expensive as alot of other things out there.

I love Garden of Life Raw Meal. It is a meal replacement with loads of protien and fiber, not too much sugar and so good for you. Takes a little getting used to but the Chocolate (Cacao) one is so good with Almond or Coconut milk and a half of frozen banana. it gets really thick if you take your time and don't drink it righ away but your body will start to crave it.

The scientific evidence to support low Glycemic Index and weight loss is mixed, it's better to just stick to a well balanced diet, and a part of that diet is eating carbs for energy.

Lots out there but don't confuse protein powder with meal replacement powder. Meal replacement powder has protein but also lots of other vitamins , a protein powder is mostly just protein.

I don't support the idea of low-glycemic diets necessarily leading to weight-loss. But the OP stated quite clearly they were looking for items with reduced sugar AND carbs.

I use Syntrax Matrix. Depending on the flavor, I mix it with milk or OJ and frozen strawberries. I has been using Ideal Shapes' MSRs and they're good, but Syntrax Matrix keeps me feeling fuller longer.

I also have been using this. I've been experimenting with Tera'swhey Grass Fed Organic Whey, Protein 17 Pasture-Fed Organic Whey, Raw Protein organic vegetable based proteins...no soy (From Garden of Life), and Garden of Life Raw Meal.
Actually, I've discovered that the whey supplements also make an excellent, creamy, coffee creamer. :) All of these supplements are very filling and the satisfied feeling lasts a long time.
If you are interested, you can look at my diary to see fat, protein, carb, etc... amounts for these products.

I love my hard earned money to support business that care about the same things that I do. :)

  • I'm doing the Body By Vi 90 Day challenge and I've lost 25 pounds so far by using it. The 90 Day Challenge can be whatever you want it to be, whether it's to get healthy, get fit, lose unwanted weight, and/or gain lean muscle. I didn't do those crazy and dangerous exercise routines, without counting calories, without eating those special meals, using those wraps, and also without taking harmful pills. Also, I didn't do this by myself, I did it with a group of people, family and friends to hold each other accountable and honestly, had fun doing it. Would you like more information?

Yeah I've used the Body By Vi before the only thing I dont like about it is that you are on automatic order for $50 and it only comes in one flavor. The cake batter flavor is good and can be mixed with other things, but it would be nice if they had more options
