Any Canadians know what type of doctor to see about knees?

Options
I've had a knee problem for two years now and I've been to see multiple doctors about it (my regular doctor and 2 different walk-in clinic doctors) but they're not taking me seriously. They're not taking me seriously because there's nothing significant which could have caused it (no sports when it happened, no falls, nothing like that. I think it was from stocking lower shelves at work.) The only doctor who took me seriously about it was my osteopath, but he can't do anything with it because it seems to be a torn ligament. I've been looking online and I think (stress that think) that it might be a torn lateral colateral ligament (the ligament on the outside of my knee). Is there any way I can refer myself to a doctor who deals with this sort of injury? Does anyone know exactly what sort of doctor that would be? I've given it plenty of time to heal as I was told to and it's just not happening; I want it looked into by someone who cares.

Go to your regular doctor, and tell them that you want a referral to an orthopaedic surgeon. Don't ask, tell.

    Orthopaedic surgeon.

Marvelous! That's just exactly what I needed to know. I needed to know the name of the type of doctor to demand a referral to. Thank you all!

Orthopedic surgeon sounds right, and you'll need a referral so you will have to talk to your fam doc.

Hi I had the same family doctor for 20 years, and for the past 3 years have suffered with my right leg, all my doctors kept doing was trying different medications, till finally I had enough. I changed doctors and she referred me to a specialist right away, turned out I needed a new hip as mine was bone and bone, I saw the specialist within 6 months and had the surgery 2 months after that, still recovering but thank goodness for my new doctor. I am not sure if you can refer yourself to a specialist or not, mine was at the Hip and Knee Clinic in Edmonton, I sure wish you luck

Why do you need to be Canadian to know the answer?
