Hi all !!!
I see some sites which advice to calculate the number of calories burned while exercising , depends on the exercise you do, your weight, and the time spent doing the exercise. I noted that, higher the person's weight higher is the number of calories burned..
how do you calculate yours?
Thank you for your time :flowerforyou:

I use several sites to look up a calories burned estimate. As far as I know, all of them take your weight into consideration. MFP and Sparkpeople already know your weight if you're logging it. Caloriesperhour asks for your weight as does the site I use to calculate treadmill stuff. You can't really get an accurate estimate without knowing your weight. As you stated, the less you weigh, the less you burn because your body is moving around less resistance. 165 pound me burned more doing the same activity than 117 pound me because 165 pound me was lugging around an extra 47 pounds.0

I ABSOLUTEY use calculators that include my weight if I can especially for walking and treadmill use.
Many times I have mentioned something like "I burned 600 calories walking on the treadmill for an hour" and a 150 lb person says something like "There is no WAY you burn 600 calories, I have a high quality heart rate monitor and I only burn 350 in an hour!"
And my response is something like this...
Have you ever carried a 50 lb bag of flour?
Think you could carry 2 of them?
Oh! Good for you!
Now walk on the treadmill for an hour like that"
Now check your heart rate monitor.
Hey buddy, you ok?0 -
Thank you for your responses , appreciate!!
Jenmc14: so that the reason mfp and sparkpeople don ask the weight... Thanks a ton

As far as I know they do. I was pretty much exclusively using Sparkpeople when I lost all my weight, and I definitely noticed as I lost weight that I was getting a lower and lower calorie burn. It's a bummer, you burn less even working harder AND you have to eat less!?! , but that's the way it is.0 -

I find that MFP tends to overestimate my calories burned (in my experience) and that this one gives a more reasonable estimate: http://www.shapesense.com/fitness-exercise/calculators/heart-rate-based-calorie-burn-calculator.aspx
Maybe it's because it asks for your avg heart rate as well.0 -
I have an HRM and the trainer at the gym said to me "It's not that accurate. Your heart rate will be measured properly, however, it doesn't know how lean you are, therefore, will mis calculate your calories burned." He basically told me that people who are more defined (meaning more muscle) will burn more calories then someone who has a higher body fat %. Mind you, the person that has more body fat % probably has to work harder to move the way the person does with lower body fat %. That was my argument and he told me that it was true. However, he's seen me workout and the HRM does me no justice
haha - so it depends on how effective you are and how hard you work!0 -
My caloric burn per minutes of biking, walking, etc" has changed here on MFP as my weight has changed.
MFP does take our weight into consideration.
I don't use an HRM, but they use your weight, too, I'd think... And the machines at the gym will use your weight if you input it, otherwise it is usually based on 150 pounds.... Or will say what it is.0 -

I used sparkpeople to lose 70lbs. I now use MFP for reaching smaller goals and maintaining . I agree they already do the math based on age, sex and weight but I recently got a heart-rate monitor I have noticed MFP is a little off for me. I also use the Noom app and their calorie burn count is nearly spot on but their food entry is stupid ... what do ya do.0
