How do you stay motivated? I give up so easily because I just lose hope. Help?

when I realized that there has been nothing in my life that I've been proud of. I have nothing going for me. That alone is motivating. I want to lose weight more than anything else in the world. When you want something so badly, you will not quit. Self motivation comes first.
I recently found nice people on here who are in the same situation as me. They keep me motivated when I see their progress. I don't have anyone in my life motivating me but the people on MFP are so helpful.0 -
Wow! You've lost so much weight! I'm hoping I will find nice people here! How long did it take you?0

Set reasonable expectations. Don't expect to lose 10 pounds a week. Think of it as a lifestyle change and enjoy all the little changes you are going through. For me, my health is very important. I know if I eat healthy and exercise its better for my overall health even if the scale doesn't move much. Good luck!0

I always try to stay optimistic and keep trying.
Quotes also help.
ex.) My favorites.
"A man can only quit in two ways if he gives up or he dies."
"Nothing is impossible when heart and mind are put to the test.-Spartacus
"The only easy day was yesterday.-SEAL Team 1 (U.S Navy)
"In the end there will only be chaos."-Kratos
etc.0 -

Just keep going. Some days are good, some days are not, but a day is only a day and there is always another one.0

I tell myself that no food taste as good as how getting healthy feels. And truly, it doesn't. I still struggle with emotional eating, and sometimes I lose the battle. But, I pick myself up and continue on. I have a long road in front of me, so it gets overwhelming, but I know that I can do the next right thing. Keep going, because you deserve it!0

Because quitting gets you back to the starting point, or even worse. You have to be in this for the long haul. There will be successes and failures; good days and bad. You may sometimes stall in weight loss. You will not be perfect. Until you are truly ready and willing to stick to it through thick and thin, this will not work. It is slow sometimes. The weight will not just fall off. This takes work! It took me years to get to this point. When you can't take it anymore, you will know and be ready. My day was June 6, the day after my birthday. I had had enough!0

Whoa! All you guys are great! Thanks everyone. I've been slacking and it's only the third or so week
was it hard for you to start and actually stay on track with your diet during the first couple of weeks? Once again, you guys are awesome.. I wouldn't have even guessed anyone would even reply!

I remind myself that I'm not here to lose weight. Losing weight is secondary. I'm here to change years and years of bad habits and behaviors. Those are what got me to my high weight. When I change those habits, the weight should come off. While the weight is coming off slowly, I'm doing great in other areas. I eat a real breakfast every morning rather than getting a pepsi and honeybun out of the vending machine. I pack my lunch every day rather than getting something from the cafeteria at work. I'm tracking everything (no cheating). If I go over my calories, so be it. No beating myself up this time around. I look at the week holistically. If I've been under most of the rest of the week, the one day I choose to go out with friends isn't going to hurt me. I'm focusing on adding good habits. Drinking more water. Snacking on fruits and veggies instead of chips and chocolate. Paying attention to what makes me feel the most full. Exercising whenever possible. (This one has been the most challenging because of work.) I'm down 9 lbs since February 22 which I think is pretty good.
Honestly, this feels sustainable to me and nothing I've done before felt that way. And believe me, I've tried nearly everything.0 -

I agree with everything here and add this: this is NOT a diet, which suggests something temporary. I eat what I eat and I log it all. If I go over my calories I won't see the results I want as quickly as I want. And sometimes I do go over. Not a big deal, just one day in a lifetime of days.0 -
When I was at my worst, I was feeling so low that I almost gave up on life completely. I never want to feel like that again!
Knowing I have the ability to better myself one day at a time is how I stay motivated.0 -
Motivation is internal. If something is important enough to you, then obstacles can usually be overcome. I usually find that people who get frustrated and impatient don't have a specific enough plan and/or set unrealistic goals for themselves.
If you had 30 days to lose 4% of your body weight in a month or you would die, you'd find a way to get it done. Sounds extreme, but the point is come hell or high water, it would get done.

I know exactly how you feel.I always say I'm sticking to it & end up quitting & the cycle repeats itself which makes me more frustrated.I came across a quote awhile back that said..."If you are tired of starting over...stop quitting!!! I said if I want different results I have to do something never done before & that's set a goal & stick with it. Now I'm not just dieting & exercising I'm making lifestyle changes...& you can do it too don't give up!!0

Wow! You've come along way! Congratulation! I think my lowest point is usually when I'm in the fitting room and realize how bad it's gotten. Not as bad compared to you but to me it feels horrible. but great job! You're doing so awesome0 -

Ultimate goals: health, not beauty. Fitness, not weight loss. Grace, not just my own willpower. Thankfulness.
