It's a great form of cardio and if you keep a good pace, you can burn a good amount of calories compared to walking.

Hiking is the best thing ever!! My husband and I hike every Sat. without fail and we average 8-10 miles each time. We hit different trails/parks each time and I have to say, it's a great workout! And you cannot beat the scenery!

By all means, hiking is the best thing I have ever taken up. Enjoy!

    Go for it!
Be sure you've got good shoes, wear appropriate clothing, take water and food.
Also be sure to let a responsible person know where you are going and when you'll be back.
    Enjoy.

Cardio is cardio.. having a natural place to walk, with a great view, ups and downs, peaks and valleys- sounds amazing! I live it Iowa, and hiking here just isn't the same.. Enjoy it and take advantage of your environment! Just be careful of proper footwear for stability and support- a twisted ankle will ruin your day.

I live in Bahrain and really miss the British countryside :(

(there are lots of nice things about living in Bahrain though, so I'm not complaining... but definitely go hiking and enjoy it!!!!!!!)

Hiking is great for the booty! Much better than walking, I'm terrified of the pancake booty that walkers seem to get so I actually make sure that I'm walking on uneven ground (more like hiking). I'm looking forward to getting to go actually hiking soon cause I finally have the endurance for it, you can't just go for a 15 minute hike.

The thing about hiking for me too is that there are often amazing views to be had that not everyone gets to see, ya know!

I would love to go hiking. I live in London so there's no rural areas at all...Sucks. Thinking of making a trip to Scotland or something. Anyway...it's good exercise! and fun too.
  • I would go with hiking. I'm in the middle of the cornfields. I still hike to work by carrying a 40lb (20kg) backpack for added resistence.

I'm in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. I hike with a 30+ lb. kid on my back. Definitely, a good workout.

I do it here where I can, as there are bear coyote, and big cats but I am training for a completion so I will be pushing myself.

<<< That's my view. Love it. Mountains are good too. Enjoy!
  • I do a hiking vacation once a year. Hiking is the most glorious form of exercise IMO. I did a 6 mile hike last Saturday and I burned 1252 calories according to my HRM. I joined several groups this year and I'm training to do Mt. Kilimanjaro next year.

This. I live in a very flat region of UK and have to go on holiday to do any proper hiking.

Apart from the fact I'm very jealous? I say get to it - you've gotta make the most of your surroundings, or else it's a terrible waste!

Side note: What kind of carrier do you use? My son outgrew our Ergo in height but not weight. I also live in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. :)

All...desert, mountains, valleys, hills....you name it I will hike it. Since I am military I move around a lot so I get some really good hiking places in from time to time. Currently, where I am stationed at now, has some wonderful hiking trails up and down the leeves along the Mississippi River.

If it is a sturdy hiking trail I like to run it. Trail running is the sheetz!

I love to hike the mountains. I spent 30 years in Colorado and we did a lot of hiking. Our favorite spot was Rocky Mountain National Park, near Estes Park. On days we were ambitious we would hike about 15 miles. I was really in shape in those days. Once we moved 4 years ago, I started gaining weight.

I will put my 2 cents here on carriers. The Osprey is the BEST we've found. Our 30 pounder isn't outgrowing it and it'll last a lot longer. And it is comfortable. We comparison shopped a while before we picked this one. It was much more comfortable than the Deuter.

We live on the beach right now. I miss mountain hikes, but beach and wave hikes are pretty amazing at sunrise.
