Hike! I've hiked everywhere I've lived and love it. It's a great way to get exercise, meet new people, and explore.0

If you enjoy it...Do it!0

Hiking here in the Carolinas!0 -
Ooh, me too! I'm in an area with some hills and small mountains, and I am so looking forward to spring weather to do some hiking. Just need a decent pair of hiking shoes. What could be better? Fresh air, nature. Beats the gym, and you can pack a camera (or your cell phone) along with some snacks and water. You get a great workout without being bored to tears. Just be safe about it!0

Hiking is the best!! It's the main reason my bf and I want to move to the Upper Peninsula because its one of our favorite activities! We try to do at least one backpacking trip a summer but we would do more if we weren't so poor. I had to train hard for that! Lugging a backpack through the wilderness for a week is a lot of work but the best experience ever! We do shorter local hikes now and its fun, I rather hike than do cardio in the gym any day.0

I live in Denver and haven't been hiking in a while... starting next weekend to get ready to climb Long's Peak in August. It's only my 2nd 14er (I grew up at the base of Pike's Peak and climbed it twice). I've got a 25lb pack limit to start, mostly for my camera gear!0

Jealous!!!! We hike every weekend (mostly to state parks nearby), and have been to colorado a couple of times. I WISH I lived near some mountains where I could hike every day!0 -
It's the hardest exercise I've ever done, but it was great. I can zumba for hours, but hiking, whew... But the times we have gone have been so rewarding.0

I live in a river valley and there is a great 9 mile trail from the site of the Battle of Tippecanoe (1811) and the hills the Indian Prophet stood on and it goes along the Wabash river. So beautiful!
About an hour south is a state park with TONS of hiking trails from easy to very difficult. As a kid, the wood ladders in the gorges terrified me and as an adult, I really appreciate the danger and the fun that comes from completing one.
My boyfriend and I need to get some proper hiking boots, he twisted his ankle last summer since we just work trail running shoes. Can't wait for warmer weather!0 -
Cardio is cardio.. having a natural place to walk, with a great view, ups and downs, peaks and valleys- sounds amazing! I live it Iowa, and hiking here just isn't the same.. Enjoy it and take advantage of your environment! Just be careful of proper footwear for stability and support- a twisted ankle will ruin your day.0

Hiking... love, love, LOVE hiking! We live in a great area that there are hiking trailheads less a mile from our house.
Last year we bagged several peaks and hoping to do more this summer. Also found a love for backpacking... combining my two favorite things to do -- camping and hiking! :happy:0 -
Hiking is my primary form of cardio! I hike several times a week. I get out on multi-day backpacking trips whenever I get a chance. My husband and I even run a hiking website for our state.
My philosophical view on hiking is that it's FANTASTIC! There is nothing better for the mind and body than being outdoors!
Now... if you're talking about views, as in vistas... here are a few of my favorites from my last year on the trail:

I'm jealous. No mountains here in New Orleans. I used to hike whenever I could when I lived in California. Calming.0

Fun, challenging, good exercise!0

Lots of mountains around me as well. I can literally walk to a trail. Its awesome. Assuming its a good amount of uphill and you keep a steady pace it doubles the cal of walking.0

I hike nearly every weekend unless I am bicycling or snowshoeing. The views are AMAZING! Pics on my profile page-may be friends only, not sure.
If you want to know if it is good exercise-you bet-cardio-especially if a significant portion is uphill. It will tone your legs, butt, lower back muscles. If you carry a backpack with any weight in it, it will help with upper back and shoulders and a little bit on the core in general.
I have lost 81 lbs per the scales this morning (not official, just a quick check), so I have to assume I am somewhat correct with my statements.0 -
I would bet your view is much better than mine in a very flat area! I can see some cornfields.0

I'm in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. I hike with a 30+ lb. kid on my back. Definitely, a good workout.
Side note: What kind of carrier do you use? My son outgrew our Ergo in height but not weight. I also live in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.
I will put my 2 cents here on carriers. The Osprey is the BEST we've found. Our 30 pounder isn't outgrowing it and it'll last a lot longer. And it is comfortable. We comparison shopped a while before we picked this one. It was much more comfortable than the Deuter.
We live on the beach right now. I miss mountain hikes, but beach and wave hikes are pretty amazing at sunrise.
I will add my opinion, and also throw in a vote for the Osprey! We just bought an Osprey Plus carrier and LOVE it! We tested the Deuter and Osprey in the store (REI) a few times before we went in to purchase. Before going in, we planned on getting the Deuter. When we got there, we had a GREAT store rep help us fit them both properly. After a proper fitting, the Osprey fit perfect on me (I'm 5'5'') and had about the same fit on my husband (6'0'') as the Deuter had on him. We bought it and tested it out last week for a few miles around the Grand Canyon one day a few miles at Lake Powell the next day. No problems at all! I even rolled my ankle and fell pretty hard the second day, and my husband said it didn't phase our son at all (he kind of thought it was fun).
Of course, you really need to try them out and think about what you need. We know we will eventually do longer hikes, so having the storage in the Osprey was necessary for us. The Deuter that had the same amount of storage space was a bit more expensive. Also, our son loved tucking his feet up onto the mesh on the Osprey (you'll know what I'm talking about when you see one) when he wanted to curl up and nap. His legs weren't just dangling. The osprey also has stirrups for their feet, which is nice.0 -
<---- Me hiking along the Amalfi coast a few weeks back. I ate a 4 course Italian meal with wine every evening and managed to maintain my weight on holiday!! This weekend I burned 5,000 calories doing only 11 miles of hiking in the lake district but I did climb 800m during that hike and scrambling up a couple of rock faces can burn a lot of calories while working wonders on your *kitten*! Hike on!!0

I love hiking, we do it every weekend in the warmer months. I live in Northern Colorado so winter months are a little hard to hike without snowshoes ( which I dont have )0
