Is a pinch of salt really 500 mg sodium?

In the food database what do you use to enter a pinch of salt? And what is the sodium count for it? I can only find one for 1 gram and 500 mg sodium. Seems a lot to me.

Thanks!

the only way to know is to weigh out your salt. 500 mg is half a gram, so depending on your pinch size it is either accurate or not.

Depends on the kind of salt ..

1/4 tsp of Common table salt is 590 mg sodium
1/4 tsp of Kosher Salt is 480 mg Sodium
1/4 tsp of Sea Salt is 460 mg Sodium

A couple cooking sites I saw mentioned that a pinch is between 1/16th tsp and 1/8th tsp

    so no. Not even close.

    eta: the word I forgot.
  • Just looked at my mortons salt, ONE QUARTER TEASPOON is 590 mg -- Hope it helps!

yeah, I never remember to actually weigh out a pinch when I am cooking in my kitchen! The database set it to one gram, so if I enter .5 that seems much more reasonable to me.

Do you currently suffer form hypertension that this would be a big deal and a cause for concern?
