My fellow hourglass-shaped ladies,
Have you managed to reduce your love handles? If so, I would appreciate some tips! Any specific type(s) of exercise, or anything at all! My waist is getting smaller, but I feel like the bottom of my hourglass still has too many hours!

Bump for the replies! Also, right now I'm doing Insanity and am losing inches all over so hopefully this will help with the love handles as well. I just started month two which, I've heard from others, is where the results get serious.0

Sadly, you cannot spot reduce. However, you can work to lower your overall BF% with strength training. Compound lifts like squats and deadlifts have tremendously helped my whole lower body.0

Insanity...what kind of workout is this? I have heard alllllll about it but have never really looked into it. Im doing 30DS right now and wondering what to do after..
And Im also curious about some love handle exercises!!0 -
I would recommend doing exercises, stretches that work the hips.. e.g. hip raises, hip flexors, squats, lunges, deadlifts..
Want to trade where the fat is coming off? It's been coming off my hips, my waist seems to be the last to go :laugh:0 -
I have been doing LOTS of lunges, squats, speed walking, stair climbing, hiking and kickboxing. I also do these once or twice a week. I have lost a few inches since Jan! http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/workout/butt/exercises/fast-hips-workout/?page=10

Thanks everyone for the great responses! It's so nice to know I'm not the only one with this issue.
Truthfully, I do know my hips have gone down a little - I noticed my "last-resort-snug-undies" weren't so snug today lol so I guess that's a good thing. My jeans are still making me feel fat though - jeans have GOT to be the worst.
I am going to try all these great suggestions. Thanks so much!0 -
I've found that Spin class has really helped my lower half. The intense cardio coupled with the focus on the leg muscles seems to be helping. I'm still more of a pear shape than I'd like to be, but it's coming off...slowly. :-)0

Insanity is a lot of plyometrics mixed with other bodyweigth exercises. Very intense. Some would say insanely so.0 -
Training for marathons and practicing Tae Kwon Do = great burns!!0

I have an hourglass figure despite the stereotype that Asians can't have curves. I think it is because I grew up with a mainly American diet...
I have an extremely slender waist, but my butt and thighs are huge in proportion. In order to lose the love handles, I had to slim down everywhere. I stayed away from running at first because I thought it would make my legs even more bulky.
After awhile, I began jogging anyway and I now have no love handles and no cellulite. While my thighs are still very large, I learned to embrace it. It may not be what my family likes, but my boyfriend loves it :P0 -
When I did the 30 Day Shred I noticed that my sides and hips had started to firm up. Defninitely lost inches.0

I'm hourglass I find a mix of cardio and weights works best. The sides is the first I notice which goes.
I used to go to this fitness camp class the guy did a variety of body weight exercises (lunges , planks , burpee ,) and more forgot the rest. Then I also did my own cardio interval.
But now i get the guy as my PT just to set the plans he's been giving me HIIT plans cardio+bodyweight/weights mix and that works and is better than what I did before.0 -
As I lost, the waist got smaller and smaller. So did my bust. The hips looked bigger but they were going down in inches. It took a long time for hips to reduce. They are still bigger and not proportioned to waist but... they did get smaller. I exercise on treadmill w/little incline and I don't use elliptical as this increase the butt size. I do like lunges and squats.0

my love handles and saddlebags at the sides of my outer thighs are going thanks to leslie sansone 5 mile walk, its a 12 min mile and you complete it in just over 60mins, theres 2 mins of jogging each mile and its great for toning your bottom half, theres high knees, side steps, kicks and jogging plus arm moves for upper body. Its low intensity but it makes me sweat and im grouping it with 30 day shred and hoping to lose 2 inches off of hips and another 2 off of my waist with it all0

I have a hourglass figure. The "secret" to maintaining hourglass physique with great waist to hip ratio means avoiding ab workouts especially avoiding direct work to the obliques. I personally do cardio and yoga. Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga already works enough on the core strength and there is no need to build more muscle in the upper body. Another thing, choosing the proper clothes, especially underwear plays a big role in maintaining this figure. Avoid those low-rise jeans and pants! And of course, nutrition is probably the most important part. Less carbs!0

Incorporate a weighted hip thrust and stiff-legged or Romanian Deadlift into your routines to focus on the glutes and hamstrings. Women are notoriously weak in this area, and we don't have a gorgeous set of muscles unless we work 'em.
For myself, I can currently hip thrust much heavier (30% heavier) than I can squat or deadlift, so I know I'm not working the glutes to their maximum with my typical combo lifts.0
