How long does it take to condition your body to running

I'm a brand new runner experiencing knee pain. I've cut my runs down to one mile every few days so I can give my body time to adjust. How long does it take for your joints to get used to running? Should I keep at this pace for a week or two or give it a full month before increasing my mileage?

if it's tendonitis, you'd be best to just stop doing anything for at least 2 weeks.0

I used this to get ready for my first 1/2 and it worked great http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/half_marathon.html
He does the training plans for the Disney marathons
I timed 2:27 which for a first attempt I thought was pretty good, esp b/c the schedule was 13 weeks and I did it in 9.0 -
frankly mine never really gets used to it. If i take more than a few days off, my right knee starts to bug me. Running is pretty hard on the body0

I am in the EXACT same boat and it is SO frustrating!! I have no idea what the issue is, although I have noticed that my knee is now making a loud "cracking" sound when I bend down and even sometimes just walking. I can do the elliptical with no pain, and can do spin class with just an occasional twinge of pain every once in awhile. I would really like to be able to run more.:frown:0 -

Thanks! I don't think I could handle this yet, since 25/30 minute runs are what originally caused my knee pain, but he linked a conditioning program that could help me get used to running.0 -

You're not running the whole time you're running intervals at your pace. So for my daughter who just started running she literally runs 20 seconds then walks 40 seconds the whole time I run 4 min walk 30 seconds and my husband runs 3 min and walks 1 min. It's really at your pace. you work UP to the long runs on the weekends. I think after the training I probably ran 11.5 miles of the 13.1 it's weird how it works out in the end. However, I don't train a long run 3 times a week.0
