Wellbutrin

Is anyone else taking this? My doc gave me a script for it today. I was on Paxil and Effexor and both caused weight gain. I heard Wellbutrin doesn't but would like to know from anyone who's taken it if you've experienced weight gain.
Please PM me if you don't want to reply to a public post. I'd just really appreciate any feedback

* I have been on Wellbutrin for several years now. When I started it - it was taken in combo with Effexor. I remember the doctor calling it ( the combo of the two meds) his California Cocktail. Hmmmm Oh Well, I remember how rapidly I felt BETTER - like in 7-10 days. I was so depressed prior to the med I could barely put one foot in front of the other. After the 1st year, we dropped out the Effexor and now I only take the Wellbutrin. This is the same drug used to help people stop smoking - Zyban. The chemical name is buproprion. It does cause DRY mouth!! So drinkng 10 glasses of water a day is never a problem for me. I take it first thing each morning as it seems to have a slight stimulating effect on me, so I never take it in the evening. All said, it was TRULY a life - saving medication for me. It did NOT cause weight gain for me. Best wishes with issue.0

I took it to quit smoking the first time and I gained weight, but I think it was from quitting.. But it does work quickly and I did feel wonderful on it. I didn't experience any side affects... My only regret is that I didn't continue taking it.
Although it did make my husband and sister feel like they were on speed and gave them both an upset stomach.. But my husband is bi-polar, so it may have been the wrong med.
Good luck!0 -
I've had a very good experience with this med. I take the generic immediate release. I do only take it in the morning because I can have trouble sleeping if I take it at night.
It did not cause weight gain and in fact I lost a few pounds when i first started due to the "high" that some get when you first start taking it. That goes away after about a week as your body gets used to it though.
It really took away my deep sadness too, I love it.0 -
I've been taking it for several years now and hasn't seemed to be a cause for weight gain. I just needed to quit having babies so I could concentrate on loosing what I alredy had. LOL
I've tried several different Rx for depression, and this has been the one with the least side effects. Good luck!0 -
Thanks everyone for your replies ... even those of you who PMd me. Much appreciated. I feel better about this drug now. I'm getting the script filled tomorrow. I can handle most side effects but weight gain is the one thing that scares me because I feel like I have absolutely no control over my body.
I was prescribed Lyrica when I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and gained 10lbs in 2 weeks! I stopped taking it and lost the weight soon after.0 -
I took this 5 years ago to quit smoking. I actually lost weight, it completely killed my appetite (I lost about 20 pounds in 8 weeks) but I had some other side effects too. I woke up almost every night at around 2am. Sometimes for a short period of time, sometimes for hours. I also had horribly dry mouth for about 2 weeks (it did go away but when I had it, it was awful). I did not refill the script after 8 weeks, mainly because I felt like it was starting to affect my mood. I seemed to be becoming depressed and crazy, but that might have been from the lack of sleep.
Oh and it did work to quit smoking, I haven't had a cigarette since April 2005! :drinker:0 -

It made my husband extremely mean also! I dealt with him being hot tempered & verbally abusive for 2 years BEFORE finding out he needed to switch meds! (which in return stressed me out to the point of weight gain!) Therefore, I guess it caused weight gain for me though I did not actually take it LMBO!!!0 -
My doctor prescribed it to me several years ago to help me with food cravings. She said I should lose weight with it. Although, I didn't take it for very long, and I didn't lose weight, I didn't gain any either......good luck!0

I took my first pill this morning and after about half an hour I felt like I could run a marathon! I went grocery shopping and was actually zipping up and down the aisles! I even had energy to chase after my 3 year old nephew!0

I took it several years ago myself. I had a bad headache for over a week, lots and energy then I got MEAN! Hopefully, it will work well for you like some of the others. With the energy I lost some weigh, no gain. Good luck!0

I've been on Wellbutrin for about 3 weeks now for depression. I was on Zoloft previously but didn't feel like it was helping. I feel GREAT since I'm taking Wellbutrin. I've lost weight but it's because at the same time that I started taking it, I started working out and eating better. I think it gives me energy and I don't feel like just laying around all day like before. The only side effect I've had is constipation when I first started it. I know..TMI! Sorry! But all is well now! Good luck, I hope it works for you!0

I'm currently taking Zoloft for PPD, but I feel like I have NO energy! I literally will lay in bed all day. I don't feel depressed, just 0 energy! I called my dr today and he prescribed wellbutrin. I start taking it tomorrow, and I'm REALLY hoping I have more energy!0 -
Talk to your doctor about the drug Savella for your Fibromyalgia. It does not have the side effect of weight gain, in fact I dropped about 8 lbs. initially as it makes you a little queasy. After years of taking drug "cocktails" to help control my fibromyalgia, this is the one I have had the best luck with. Good luck.0

Wellbutrin is also used to help loose weight. I had a tubal reversal last year and the doctor put me on it to loose weight. But BEWARE of the side effects and read all of them because there is alot of them. When I quit taking it I put on 10lbs fast!0

I took it for about 6 months 3 years ago. The GP thought my problem was depression, and he wanted me to quit smoking. After a month nothing had changed for me so he increased the dose. After that I got irritable and insomnia set in. My original problem was worse! The biggest problem was the restless leg syndrome! I could not keep still for 5 minutes! All day and night I would twitch and kick, and wake myself up if my boyfriend didn't wake me up to get me to go to the other room so he could sleep! I had originally gone to the GP for exhaustion and lack of sleep....all that was caused by stress at work and looong days at work. I weaned myself off the Wellbutrin and quit taking it. It took me almost a year to get back to normal with no restless leg. It took leaving that job to get my exhaustion and sleeplessness resolved. During the entire time I gained weight, but that was due to the stress. I still smoke.0

I took it for about 1.5 years until I got pregnant with my DS, it worked very well and I had no real side effects. In the beginning I had headaches, but they subsided after a couple of weeks. I never really felt that different (other than not being depressed/stressed) while taking them, which is what I wanted. My DH swore he could tell a difference in the way I acted though...i would consider that successful!
Anyways, as far as weight loss, that was one of the reasons my doctor gave me Wellbutrin because it helps with cravings and addictive behavior (whether it be for smoking, weight loss etc.). I did lose quite a bit weight before I got pregnant and I think it helped. I also know a friend who quit smoking using it too.
I recommend giving it a few weeks (I believe it takes 6 - 8 weeks to really get in your system), and you will know if its right for you. I actually switched after I had my son to a different medicine because I had post-partum pretty bad and Wellbutrin wasn't cutting it anymore (my guess is hormonal changes). Good luck!0
