I use organic butter, ghee, and walnut, grape-seed, and olive oil....that's it:) A doctor gave me a bunch of stuff to read on margarine back in 2007...that stuff should be outlawed!

For those allergic to milk products (or just those that want a change for helth:

Coconut oil. It tastes great on toast and is fantastic for cooking.
Oh and it is a healthy fat that actually helps you lose fat.

    butter...

also, if you do margarine, make sure it is 100% expeller pressed oils and NO partially hydrogenated oil (i.e. trans-fats). We have to do margarine right now for my wife due to some dairy allergies my baby has (wife is still breast feeding). We use Earth Balance original; it's pretty good as far as margarines go. Once she's done breastfeeding though, we'll be back to using butter...sparingly....in general we have cut way back on dairy and it has greatly benefited both of us.

My son has a dairy allergy and I used to by Earth Balance for him. But now Becel has come out with one that is vegan. It is dairy free.

For the rest of us it's unsalted butter!

Butter all the way for me.

Contrary so some of the comments above it has almost the exact number of calories as margarine (except the ones that are thinned with air, salt water, dairy, etc. to lower the calories - ie: processed within an inch of their lives....) and about the same amount of sodium as margarine. The best butter is naturally sourced and has minimal ingredients. Best of all, I find that a tiny amount of butter (half a teaspoon) provides a satisfying taste other products only provide if used in much larger amounts. (This can also mean its less expensive than you thought because you use less!)

When I use anything I use butter and only unsalted at that. The salt isn't for flavor it's for preservation.: :flowerforyou:

Yes, chemistry is involved in the making of margarine... I must have missed the part of that article that explains why that is bad.

Margarine is 1 molecule away from being plastic. They originally made it to try to fatten turkeys but it kept killing the turkeys. I know which one I use.

People are still perpetuating this myth as fact? Seriously? BOTH statements here are just plain wrong.. Margarine was not invented to fatten turkeys AND, it's not one molecule away from being plastic. Why do people insist on using such a silly argument to justify their use of butter???? What's wrong with just saying "butter tastes better and it's natural therefore that is the product I choose" ?

I usually use butter but have used Earth's Balance spread when we've had to eliminate dairy, which is pretty good and no less healthy than butter.

I am trying to get back into using butter as opposed to margarine. For me, I am slowly making changes to not only eat less calories, but to eat more natural products. I am not going to go "no processed", but I am looking to focus on whole foods and foods with ingredients that I know and can pronounce.

I am really liking Kerrygold butter!

Funny because the first sentence of this link says "Replacing saturated fat with unsaturated fats helps reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke" which is about as old an hypothesis there is in nutrition.

I mainly use butter and will occasionally use tub margarine - I think the last brand I bought was Smart Balance.

I don't eat a ton of either and you cannot pay me to eat stick margarine. Ever. Not for a million dollars.

I use butter for cooking and to melt over popcorn, but I use I Can't Believe It's Not Butter on toast or bread (because it's easier to spread). I don't really use margarine.
