Is eating soon after exercise important and why?

Ok so when I exercise it usually has the effect of killing my appetite for a couple of hours but I keep seeing posts that it's important to eat within 30 mins of exercise.
Is this true and if so why? Surely my (overweight) body has enough reserves to draw on already?

I tend to drink a protein shake ASAP after working out. For me it's about fitting enough calories and protein into my day, and if I don't do it then I will run up into lunchtime and that wouldn't work either. If you're not hungry I would suggest a shake of some kind. I'm never hungry but they don't really fill you up so to speak. I've also read you need to get your protein in within 30 minutes after working out, but then I've read that's not true as well. Personally I don't see what's so magical about that 30 minutes, but I figure it can't hurt.0

You want to have some form of Protein within 30 minutes of working out...a hard boiled egg with the yoke removed or a piece of beef jerky is great. Otherwise your body will starve it self, causing you to not lose the weight.0

I can't stomach stuff like protein shakes, I prefer to get nutrients from food but I don't get why that has to be within a certain time frame like you say!0

I don't eat meat.
Why would my body starve itself when it has plenty of fat reserves to draw on?0 -
I've been wondering about this too...0

Nope. Only eat when you are actually hungry.0

Recent research suggests that ingesting protein and amino acids prior to training may be even more beneficial. Personally I only
eat after a workout if i am hungry.0
