Sticking to it on "vacation"

So, my family and I are going down to Biloxi, MS for a mini-vacation and to see some old friends. If you don't know already, the food in Biloxi is amazing. Haha. I've decided that since I've been able to lose 2-3 pounds with a cheat day once a week ever since I've started, I'm probably going to go and have one day to eat whatever (like I've been doing every week). The problem is... We're going for four days, and the last time I went on "vacation" with my family, I ended up cheating that entire week. What do you guys do to eat healthy while your away? Any suggestions? One cheat day a week hasn't ruined me yet, but four will, lol.

If it's really so difficult, which I can understand, perhaps concentrate on portion sizes? If you have ice cream, perhaps have two scoops rather than a full sundae. That kind of thing
Its quite hard to get friends/relatives to understand and be compassionate about your quest to lose weight (i've heard 'one won't hurt' and 'go ooon, treat yourself' too many times) so if you're having a homecooked meal, perhaps ask for a smaller plate. That'll help the portion sizes too if the actual meal itself can't be altered. You could take four days off calorie counting because I'm sure you'll know roughly what everything is.
Do remember that if you're on 1200 calories now, which is what alot of us seem to be on, then even if you bump the calories up with the holiday up to 2000, that's the recommended intake anyway for healthy maintenance.
You could also up the walking a bit and go sight-seeing. I don't know the full details of your holiday so I can't give you specific exercise advice but walking always helps
Have fun, too! Don't waste the break by worrying about food. Lifestyle change, not quick fix0 -

I completely understand your worry, I went on a 2 week vacation to S.Carolina to visit my sister. I was really worried because I was also doing a weightloss program with some freinds. I really struggled with what I was going to do, if I should just stick to the 1200 calories or forget that I was even trying to lose wieght. I do not do cheat day's or meal's, but if I want something I have it. I just eat a way smaller portion than before. So I finally decided when I was on vacation I was going to eat as though I had already lost all the weight and was eating as though I was maintianing my weight. I never felt like I missed a thing. I told myself to eat how I want to eat when the weight is gone and I didn't stress about it. I found I made healthy choices out of habit, like no mayo, whole wheat, and things like that, I used fillers like fresh fruit and veggies first. I didn't count one single calorie when I was gone, and I was suprised when I got home and weighed I actually lost. I hope that you will find what works for you and good luck. I know how tough it is.0

I am on vacation now and it is hard to find food that goes with my food plan. The sodium in restaurant food is off the charts. Even a Boca burger has over 1,400mg of sodium. Just eat and watch your portions. I didn't exercise today, by walking or swimming and I am over my calories also. Just enjoy and try your best. When we get home we will work to get it off.:flowerforyou:0

:flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: If you go on vacation to enjoy the people, the sights, the activities, the adventures, then you'll be successful in your eating..........BUT if you go thinking about the amazing food, you will not be successful.......don't make food so important......do the best you can....avoid restaurants when possible, pay attention to portion size, order grilled, broiled, steamed......get sauces and dressings on the side.........find every possible opportunity to do active things and walk whenever possible0

Well put! Especially the last sentence.
Just use common sense. I just got back from a two week vacation and I managed to maintain....I was thrilled. Get some hiking or something in too. You'll do great, but like she said, HAVE FUN TOO! Enjoy0 -
Hi!! I just had to post b/c you're heading to my hometown!! (bet ya couldn't guess by the name "BiloxiBelle" )
Anyway, we travel alot & when we do we like to pretty much stick to our regular breakfast, lunch & snacks, except maybe leave off 1 of my usual snacks each day. Then at dinner I try to indulge, but while being somewhat smart about it (splitting desserts among multiple people at the table, grilled fish/chicken, etc instead of fried). I also do continue to workout while I'm on vacation. It may not be for as long as when I'm at home, but I do hop on the treadmill, jog for 30 minutes around the block, lifts some weights, sometimes I bring a workout dvd w/me...all kinds of things to help keep me on track. But a few nice dinners & a few desserts shouldn't throw all of your work out the window. Enjoy yourself!! It's BILOXI!!:drinker:
(by the way, a BEAUTIFUL walk is to walk over the Biloxi/Ocean Springs bridge. It's great for all ages & a FANTASTIC way to enjoy the water, scenery, salt air....& squeeze some exercise in)0 -

I grew up in Biloxi.Spent 12 years of my life there! I'll see if I can convince someone to walk across the Biloxi/Ocean Springs bridge with me. The last time we went, there were just tons and tons of people walking across it. That never used to be the case before Katrina. I absolutely do plan to bring all my exercise videos with me! But, the last time, I relied on my exercise calories (which I don't normally eat back) I didn't lose a thing. Hmph.
Thanks everybody for your help. I'll definitely do as best I can at least 3 out of the 4 days, lol. I have all my MFP buddies to keep my accountable! Love you guys!0
