Hi Everyone,
I weighed myself this morning and got a shock. I knew I was getting heavier. My clothes were getting tighter, levering myself off the couch was a Harlem Shake in itself and walking out to collect the mail has been the extent of my daily workout for a while now. However, after reaching the low that only those who have had the weigh in shock can reach, I've decided enough is enough. I saw the ad for 'Free' Weight Watchers for two weeks, went on to their website, realised it was a con (you still have to pay about $75 upfront) and then found the haven that is My Fitness Pal. And it's free!! Amazing!
Looking forward to getting stuck into my weight loss journey (well, I'm already at the starting point... I entered my breakfast into my food tracker already :ohwell: ) That, too, gave me a fright. But anyway, onwards I go. Also looking forward to meeting you all and following all your progresses!

Welcome! Be sure and check out the app for your phone! Being able to log your food using a barcode scanner totally saved me from giving up. I'm lazy, obviously (hence being overweight) and typing in calories was getting annoying. Now I just *beep* my way through my day! Just about everything has a barcode and it encourages me to grocery shop for my food instead of drive thrus! No barcode on the mcDonald's box!
Anyways, best of luck on your journey and Stick With It! You can do it This community is a wealth of support, motivation and knowledge. Enjoy your time on MFP!

Hello, you made the right choice! MFP is a great site and there are plenty on here that have lost 100lbs + without spending a penny.
If you have a smartphone, download the app, it's a really easy way to log your food on the go. Make it part of your life and stay within your calories, eating back exercise calories and get involved with the message boards on here. There are a lot of people with great advice, some not so much - but the more you make this part of your life, the bigger the results are going to be.0 -
Other than when I was pregnant (both times), have not been this heavy. And, I can totally relate to getting off the couch (lol).
This is a journey. I am learning new things every day about myself and living a healthier lifestyle.0 -

I can see that a lot of my time is going to be spent on here... I do a lot of cooking and baking so this will be a good distraction. My poor kids will just have to starve.
I have been having a few medical problems lately and have had to have many doctor and hospital appointments. My doctor at the hospital is in awe at how obese I am. He must have told me at least 5 times that I was obese. How clever is he? No wonder he went on to be a doctor! A 50 year old, size 24 woman walked into his office and he KNEW! He just KNEW!
Anyway, off to find a nice recipe for tonight that will make short work of my allotted 500 calories....
Just had a thought ... how often should I weigh myself? I know it probably should be weekly and I will probably say yes, I will weigh myself weekly, then weigh myself every day so I don't know why I am asking actually.
Another question. How did you get into the swing of things? I am thinking of shopping daily for the things I need rather than bulk shopping as it just seems too much to get my head around at the moment. What way do you do it?0 -

It is never easy starting out but bit by bit you will discover the recipes you make that are healthy/ier than those that you generally make that are unhealthy/ier. Just try and make more of the healthy ones. I have found the simple things like cutting back on soft drinks, chocolates, chips and fast foods helps a lot and cutting back on alcohol has helped me too.
With time you will figure it all out, the main thing is you have signed up here and you have started, most importantly this shows that you are committed to doing something about your weight. Also don't go crazy trying to lose too much too quick if you think you will struggle, shows like the biggest loser may inspire some people but the methods employed in these sorts of shows aren't for everyone. Better to lose weight slower but be losing weight than throwing in the towel...0 -
Also don't be discouraged by the scales. I have found that my body weight varies by more than I plan to lose week to week so that even after a hard week of dieting I weigh more than I did the previous week. Just remember the long term goal you have set and don't be discouraged by short term failures, whether that be the scales failing on you and telling you that you are heavier when you know you should be lighter or that naughty day that you ate more than you had planned...0

Welcome! I stumbled upon MFP at the end of December when I had reached the same point as you...in fact, pretty similar weight, too. Since joining Dec. 31, I've lost 28 pounds. Many more to go, but it's come off more easilyso far than I'd dreamed. I'm now below 200, able to throw away my old pants (saving one to always measure how far I've come) and feeling much stronger and more energetic.
The support and tips from friends has been a huge help, and for the first time I actually like keeping a food diary!

Nothing gets by him does it? My doctor barely mentioned my weight and I was a way bigger size. But, he did say I need to exercise and take Vitamin D. I think I would find a different doctor if I found one so rude. If you have health concerns that need to be addressed then it's appropriate for example if you are pre-diabetic then that has to be addressed and it's appropriate. But, just talking about your weight with no plan or addressing other issues is just rude and probably malpractice if some health concerns aren't addressed. It's almost as if he thinks that if you were smaller you would have no health issues and that to me just don't seem right.0
