How do you work out at home?

Hello all! Just wondering how everyone works out at home. I have been doing alot of workout dvd's and using my elliptical. I guess what I am wondering is for those of you who work out at home what do you wear for shoes? Because I am in my living room I just go bare foot. I am not sure how good that is for your feet but I find that it is hard to be on carpet and working out with shoes on. I know this is a areally stupid question but I am wondering if I am the only person that does this or anyone had bad injuries doing it this way?

Replies

  • I was doing the 30 day shred barefoot and it really strained my calf muscle. I had to take a few days off while it healed. Now, I do it in my shoes. I have a pilates video that suggests doing the workout barefoot, though, and I usually do my WiiFit (unless I'm doing one of the runs) barefoot too.

I do p90x and 30 day shred barefoot.. I don't want any damage done to the carpet and my shoes get dirty from running outside. When I am on my elliptical I wear my shoes.

I wear my shoes unless I am doing the Wii Fit that involves using the board. I hurt my feet going barefoot, so I started wearing the shoes to give me more support.

I do the 30 day shred barefoot and I have no problems.
  • I faithfully work out at home and I wear my normal tennis shoes depending on the magnitude of the work out....on some of the less strenuous work outs that I do, i found a very thick pair of socks, sometimes i use 2 pairs and I work out and it does me just fine but like i said, it really determines on the exercises that I'm doing.
  • I always workout at home & I never go barefoot...I just don't think it's really safe unless you're doing something like pilates or yoga - which requests that you workout barefoot. I definitely recommend shoes just for joint protection.

I wear my running shoes when I jump rope and do my weight lifting just so I can have stability. I also do Ab Ripper X and Pilates but I do those barefoot. Right now, all my cardio except jumping rope is done outside...just running and walking right now and of course I wear my running shoes.

Edit - I do all my inside work outs in the foyer where it's ceramic tile.

It depends a lot on the workout. My rule of thumb is if the instructor's wearing tennis shoes, so will I. I think on so much of that stuff, your feet would benefit from the support. Much is preference though, I guess. I wear my tennis shoes for my boxing workouts even though it probably wouldn't hurt anything if I did it barefoot. And bellydance workouts I ALWAYS do barefoot.

There are no stupid questions! Barefoot is acceptable as long as your not doing anything high impact (Jumping Jacks, Running in place, Frog Jumps, etc.) Those you'll need heel support or you can damage your feet. Elliptical? I've done it barefoot before, but I'm always barefoot! I'm barefoot right now! lol! But as for workouts at home you'd be surprised what can be a workout and you don't even know it. Cleaning, doing Laundry, yard work, walking the dog, chasing the kids etc. and most of those are in the cardiovascular section of your diary. But as structured home workouts go, I just use two dining room chairs for inclined push ups, and tricep dips, reverse crunches on my stability ball, Kick the crap out of my punching bag for 30 minutes and ride my bike. hope that these can be helpful in anyway, GOOD LUCK!

I have a pair of sneakers that are only for indoors. When I try to do workout videos barefoot my feet slip and I have trouble holding a position. So I always wear sneakers. Great question:happy:

I wear my sneakers. I used to workout barefoot but I started to get a lot of pain in my feet and calves. I switched to just wearing socks but I slid all over the place.

Right now i have been doing the shred barefoot at home. Cause of the jumping jacks and what not I may want to try them with shoes on. BTW I am jealous that you are barefoot right now! I am stuck in my office at work where the AC is not working properly. :(

I used to go barefoot, although I hurt my achilles tendon whilst doing the 30DS and therefore I tried and do my workouts in trainers...although, I don't like the way trainers make my feel sweat and itch, so now I'm back to barefoot, my achilles tendon is FINE and I find this the most comfortable way of working out :flowerforyou:

I have 2 pairs of shoes devoted to workouts, one for outdoor and one for all indoor. I HAVE TO wear my shoes at all times as I have very bad knees and need the proper support or I suffer greatly.
I alternate between a few favorite DVD's one day, then a run and strength training the next day, or swimming laps a few times per week in place of the run. I don't have a gym membership and do all activity at home, or out on the sidewalks.

  • I do 3 Wii workout games:

    Walk It Out

    Just Dance

    Don King Boxing

On all of them I go barefoot with no problems.

I do all my in-home workouts barefoot and always have. I'd go barefoot outside, too, if it was safe to do so!
