What Do You Do When Injured??

( rod, plate and 12 screws and was hammered in through my knee :( )
this is what I deal with everyday, it doesn't make me quite. But it does make it harder to pick things to do. I am wanting to run/jog a little more but I notice my ankle is always in pain. I am thinking maybe I need to do more stretching with it as my ankle wasn't the area injured at all. Pretty much long story short, woman hit my car and I got a tibia fibula fracture. 1 year down gained 70lbs was already very chubby before. Was working to loose weight at that time, but then had to re learn how to walk. So 2 years down, (2 surgeries as my fibula didn't heal like they thought it would) measured food all the time during that time but still gained.

I guess what I am wondering is what should I do to strengthen my ankle? I do ankle rotations, yoga moves that have my ankle laying flat and having light pressure on it.. I use to put tiger balm around it before I went out to help relax is before a jog/light run but not helping it that much.

So what would you suggest? * FYI- doctor knows have spoken to him and he just says find new things to make it better lol*

Have you seen a physical therapist or occupational therapist? With such a significant injury and recovery process, I think I would consult a professional. [I have pins in my knee from a fractured patella - happened 10 years ago now - and I was given a fairly extensive list of exercises by a physical therapist to help improve strength and flexibility once I was healed enough to get to that point.]

yes I did go to PT, ( 1 year due to both surgeries) they pretty much got it strong enough to make me be able to walk and I do the list of what they said to stretch it out. But I am noticing its not doing a whole lot and they can't do much more for me other than say take it slow and steady. I guess I am just inpatient as I am a runner from early childhood up till that accident even with the extra fat I would run and jog because it feels awesome.

I guess just wanted to see what others can offer :)

Do you have access to a BOSU ball? Balance exercises help with ankle strength. I was RXd BOSU ball workouts by an athletic trainer when I was healing an ankle sprain in college. There are lots of videos and resources online for how you'd use one to help strengthen your ankle. You might also head to a running forum, like Runners World's online forum, and ask your question as well. When I have running pain issues, I always consult my super-runner friends. =)

Gee I am really sorry to read this, I think you are doing very well to have come so far.

I agree with the other posts, find an injury rehab specialist and get some professional advice.

I had a serious leg injury about 6 years ago and have recently had a bit of a relapse, I'm seeing a sport injury specialist this week. They are the ones to get you back on track. I know from last time, I had some very precise exercises to do with body weight and elastic bands when I was strong enough. I suspect same thing will apply this time around.

Shop around til you find a medical professional who HEARS you and LISTENS to what you want and need.
