3500 calories might only be a pound for women...

Just found this interesting in an article I was reading. Not saying it's fact or anything, just an interesting concept.

"But, speaking in terms of evolution, Nature seems protective of women's role as child bearer, and wants women to maintain adequate body fat for nourishing healthy babies. Hence, women are more energy efficient. Obesity researchers at NY's Columbia University suggest a pound of weight loss in men equates to a deficit of about 2,500 calories, while women need a 3,500-calorie deficit. No wonder women have a tougher time losing weight then do men."

That's really interesting. I feel like that would make a lot of sense, too. Since, in general, men often lose the weight quicker and can often eat a lot without gaining. I wonder if it's actually true!

yay I'm not fat, I'm just "energy efficient!"

I prefer to say that I am "too short for my weight". It has been my informal observation that obese men are big eaters and that some really big women are too. But most moderately obese women that I know are not particularly big eaters. In my case, it only took eating a few more calories than I apparently needed and moving a little less than I needed to move (because of arthritis setting in), and the body fat rises over time. Just a very slight surplus over your needs adds up to big amounts of b.f. over time (a 100 calorie daily surplus over 10 years would be 100 lbs gained over that ten years--if my numbers are correct). Then you add (metabolism-damaging) yo-yo dieting into the mix and it isn't long before your body fat is waaaay out of control. No wonder so many women complain that they are "doing everything right" and not losing weight anywhere close to the rate that men lose it. :grumble:

It has been my life-long experience that I was either losing or gaining but never staying the same. The greater victory for me will not be losing all the weight I want to lose (another 30 or so pounds--maybe not quite that much) but rather being able to maintain it once I get there.
