I am not wanting to step on anyone's toes here....hopefully, most will find this as encouragement, but anywho, here it goes...

as you see its titled holidays because as long as i have been a member here, every holiday be it a birthday, celebration, anniversary or world wide, people are choosing to fall off the bandwagon......

I know that there is a huge mass of food for the holidays, but noone can put anything in your mouth that you dont choose to put in there yourself.....if noone else cares about your health, you should....its noone elses job to be cautious but your own....

Is it hard???? YES OF COURSE......we will all mess up and make mistakes, we are human; however, we shouldnt use a holiday as a reason to mess up....I ate, i ate good for the 4th of july, but I CHOSE not to over eat...I CHOSE not to eat additional calories, or foods that I just know i did not need.

Everyday I wake up and remind myself of why I want to lose weight....I have a LONG ways to go...over 100 plus lbs....and yes I have ate over my calories by 100 or 200 out of ignorance of what I am putting in my mouth etc....but i look at myself in the mirror, my kids etc and I say, NO MORE.....then i choose not to consume the additional calories....

We need to stop using the excuses....when we mess up, be real with it...just say, I messed up...but stop using the excuses....stop using the depression...finances etc.......we all have problems but excuses are what got us overweight to begin with.....

Very well stated! :flowerforyou: On an additional note - I would love if "all " could remove the phrase " I ate good" :frown: .
OK - eating good vs "bad" . WE make choices , some are wiser- some are not. There is no such thing as "BAD" food!:grumble: The good Lord made food for nourishment. How (much) we choose to consume is something 'we" need to take responsibility for. Get over yourself people- and quit beating yourself up - for less than wise choice ..WEchose to make  !

I have to respectfully disagree with you. We are all human, not robots. I'm not on a diet. I've changed the way I eat. If I take off a day that doesn't mean that I've destroyed six months of work in one shot. If I gave up due to one "bad" day that would be failure. By paying attention to what I do even on the "bad" days and knowing that I over ate for a holiday that is success. I plan on continuing to maintain my weight even after I reach my goal. Just because I reached my goal doesn't mean that it's all over and I go back to my old ways. I think these holidays help educate us on what/what not to do.
  • i'm not on a diet either....i eat what i choose to eat....the whole purpose of my post is to get people to stop allowing "holidays" to be an excuse...if you allow a "holiday" to continue as an excuse then everytime you mess up, you will have an excuse instead of just realizing that you messed up because you didnt control what you were eating....

I have came to a point in life and weight loss that I will no longer allow any excuse, be it a bad day etc....to fall back on....I have good days, I have bad days....i mess up but i mess up etc....because at that present moment, i did not want to control myself...i allowed food to control me...it wasnt a holiday, it wasnt a bad day, it wasnt kids, injury etc....it was me not controlling myself and continuing on that day doing what i know i should have done.

I disagree as well. If people dont allow themselves little breaks here and there, they WILL fail. I ate things I shouldn't have this weekend, but I planned on it. I did extra work outs each morning so I could enjoy the fun and not count every beer I drank, or pretzel I popped in my mouth.

You have no idea what some people have gone through, and why they are over weight. You only know why YOU are over weight. I would stick to worrying about yourself, and continue to encourage, not judge, others who are on the same weightloss journey as you.

I get what you're saying, and I agree that we all got here by no other's fault but our own. However I, and I suspect some others use Holidays to feel like our normal old selves. I don't miss being fat, I don't miss being unhealthy, but I do miss being able to eat what I want, when I want. I see people getting McDonalds if they want, I see people munching on a snack at 2pm if they want....yes these people are quite often overweight, and you take the good with the bad. I love being thinner, but I also miss the carefree eating, without logging everything, without looking up each calorie, without telling myself that I am starving but I cannot eat because I only have 400 calories left and I need them for dinner. Yes I have learned a lot, and I can eyeball and I can make better choices, but it's been made pretty clear to be thus far that in order to maintaine my weight and lose more, I HAVE to count calories for the rest of my life. Otherwise I overestimate my activity and underestimate what I eat....it sometimes makes me feel like I'm in prison and I need a break from that prison.

I would imagine you've probably been at it for a lot longer before you came here (as most of us have) but you've been here for 2 months....I've been here for 2 years. I've lost 50 pounds and am really struggling to lose the last 20 and not gain back the 50 at the same time. Keeping it off is in some ways a lot harder than losing it in the first place. If I didn't have my carefree Holidays to look forward to, to think about something other than worrying about what I am eating, I would probably give up and over eat every other day of the year. I know you didn't post this to step on people's toes and I'm not taking it as such, but I just thought I would give a viewpoint from the other side. I don't see Holidays as excuses, but rather breaks for a job well done. Implying that eating bad on a Holiday and that we are all human and make mistakes conveys that we messed up, which induces guilt. I would rather decide ahead of time that I am taking the day off on a Holiday, I will enjoy it and I will get back on track the next day.
  • sorry if you got offended and NO i was not trying to lose weight before joining MFP because I have never been one to be insecure big or small; however, i am sorry if you took my post wrong...

if you notice my diary, i take breaks too...i eat icecream, chocolate etc when i feel like it....what my post was about was to stop using holidays as a reason to fall off the bandwagon...as you see for the 4th i ate bbq hamburgers and stuff as well, i just didnt allow myself to fall off the wagon....

this was in no way or shape to offend or judge, i think everyone is taking what i was saying wrong.

I do not believe in "diets"...i dont believe in depriving youself from food; however, i also dont believe in using a holiday as a reason to fall off the "bandwagon" as they say it....when i make a mistake, i make it, i dust myself off and get back up, but i dont use an excuse for it....

I get what your saying, and I agree whole heartily, just because you go on vacation is not an excuse to over do it, I spent a week in Florida and came home and had lost 2 lbs, it can be done.

Not offended, just offering a different viewpoint. Everyone is different. Since beginning this journey, I feel like all I think about is food. Not necessarily wanting it, but just worrying about what I can have, how many calories I have left, can I fit in a work out, how can I make this healthy, how can I make sure I don't gain this week, etc. So when I take a day off on a Holiday, it's not necessarily a free pass to eat everything in sight just because I can, but more like permission to think about somthing other than food for once. To eat what I want, and not think about it and feel guilty. I need this day so I don't go insane on other days.

Some people cannot trust themselves to take a cheat day, because once they start a routine it's easier for them to stick to it and not waiver. That's fine too, everyone is different. Being that there are so many different types of people here, it can be sometimes risky to post something that comes off as judgemental, something that says you are wrong if you do this. I'm not saying you're wrong at all for posting it, but I think its important to have varied views, so that it hopefully helps people to choose which view they agree with, and know that there are others who think that way. That's all.
  • I can understand that, i just know that i was not saying anyone is wrong for having a day to do as they please...i was just saying that i see how many people use a birthday, holiday etc...whereas you dont have to.....

we are human....if i want to eat icecream, i'm going to eat it and not feel guilty about it...i'm just not going to overeat on it anymore....and i'm not going to wait until a holiday or special occassion to do so...

most people fall off the bandwagon because they dont allow themselves treats etc.....whereas, you look at my diary and i have no problem eating a treat....its about learning the self control and proportioning things to where you can enjoy a snack and not over do it or feel guilty about doing it.

yes it was a risky post and it will step on some toes, if read wrong, but if read right, you will see that its not judgemental or condemning anyone in the least because i admit that if i want a snack, i eat a snack, i just dont go overboard no matter what day or the week or holiday it is....i have went over in my calories on here a few times, i dont feel guilty at all because I didnt over consume in food, just didnt choose the right things at times......
  • funny how ppl can read a post and turn it to something to argue about.
I get exactly what you're saying
I am not on a diet

    good post.

I think there is a difference between arguing, and respectfully disagreeing with someone.
