Running Advice

Hi all,

I have just started to try running. I do this on the treadmill in the gym and the other day I ran my furthest of 2.6km in 20 minutes. For training should I focus on being able to run for longer or faster. I set the speed on the treadmill to 7.2km.

Any advise would be appreciated. :-)

Running longer- distances or time- is what you should focus on. If you try to run faster before you are conditioned to running, you will just hurt yourself. 7.2 is just asking for an injury! Stick to no faster than 6.0 until you can run 5 miles or an hour without stopping.

I would advise longer for a little while. Get a general base fitness. Once you can do about half an hours running comfortably try some faster segments.
Don't try to go longer and faster at the same time.
    Good luck :flowerforyou:

I'd say longer--speed increases naturally somewhat as you get better conditioned.

Interval training (15-second sprint, 45-second easy, repeat for 15 min) is a good way to test out pushing speed. One thing I like a lot on the treadmill is picking a steady, doable pace and moving incline up and down periodically.

Thanks for all the advise. 7.2 I thought was slow as when I walk on the treadmill I walk at 6.0.

Will try to increase the duration first.
