doing a lot of abdomnial exercises will not give your son abs.
he needs to lower his bodyfat below 12%, then his abs will show up.0 -

^This. Do all the ab DVD's and programs you want but if you are not dropping body fat it wont get you abs. There is also no exercise that will target fat loss in any specific area. Lose the body fat and abs will eventually show up.0 -
To the two guys responses above... Does doing these fitness dvds not help lower body fat as well as develop muscles? What do you suggest her son do to lower body fat?0

I should have said he has taken an interest in his fitness rather than saying developing his abs
Hes only 14 and not at all over weight, in fact his abs are already very visible, we haven't measured his BF as its not really of interest since he's still a kid lol ... however he is interested and if a DVD keeps him happy doing exercise then its not a bad thing .. I'm only really interested in keeping him interested in his body at this stage as good habits formed young will last ... before and after pics would perhaps (hopefully) motivate my hubby who does need to lower his BF.
As the jillian michaels dvds also have cardio and help burn BF% I was really wondering if the Bob Harper DVDs were the same but aimed at men? ....0 -

Developing muscle will require resistance training and a calorie surplus. If I was 14 again I would be taking advantage of the muscle and strength growing potential but that is just me. Not everyone wants to have larger muscles.
As for lowering body fat, that is accomplished through a calorie deficit. You can create that deficit by eating less or exercising more. A full body workout is going to be far more effective for building strength and burning calories than targeting a certain area. Especially a small muscle group like the abs. Nothing wrong with doing these DVD's, they are just very misleading.0 -
a little extra info ... he really wants a gym membership but they won't allow him till he's 16 so I'm really trying to keep any motivation going till he's allowed to join the gym and lift weights (this is what he wants).0

If he is enjoying them then that is great. Much worse things a 14 year old could be doing. : )
Resistance training can be done with a lot of body weight exercises especially for the beginner.

There is also a lot of great work that can be done with resistance bands and adjustable dumbbells and those can be pretty inexpensive.
Some people learn the hard way after doing thousands of crunches and not getting abs. It can be very frustrating. You really have no control over where your body decides to lose fat from. You can run everyday and lose fat in your face and neck first. Most people are surprised they are not losing weight in their legs and butt because that is where most of the work is being done. It just doesnt work that way.0 -

@ tammy .... I had a look at cardio rev but decided against it due to the fact that he walks everywhere when out with friends so cardio isnt really what he needs .... although I might think about getting it for myself once Ive completed jillians lol
@cherrypie ... yeah thanks he will be over the moon that its harder work ... I think he was starting to find jillians ripped in 30 and 6 week 6 pack a little easy hopefully Ill get hubby involved too, I'd love to do the DVDs together0 -
Donna, I cant answer your ? about this dvd, but I have a 13 year old interested in weights as well. I'm so proud! He has no fat on his body (you can see his ribs with his shirt off), and he's hoping to bulk. Unlike me, one month after starting, his jeans are falling off. I told him not to worry that often the waist is the first to go [/pinocchio].
I would say despite the naysayers (why are people so negative???), get him the dvd and let him enjoy working his abs. For overall workouts, I loved the Supreme 90 system, and it's like $20. When my kid is ready for that, I'll give him a copy. You might want to check it out.
Good job Mom!0 -
