I am unable to complete the couch to K challenges d/t my asthma. I can increased my jogging indoors to increase ability but the programs stop go method aggravates my asthma. I have been encouraged to just run 10 minutes then increase when i can handle the new challenge.0

I have asthma and have complete the C25K. I use a preventative inhaler every morning, and prior to my running, I do a couple of puffs on my "emergency" inhaler (pro-air) Get's me through it without any wheezing0

I don't know how bad your asthma is, mine is pretty mild, my doctor recommended that I use my rescue inhaler before any strenuous runs, or if it is windy out, or on high pollen days. I would consult your doctor on this one, especially if it was as bad as it sounds.0

I'm about halfway through the program with asthma, I use an inhaler before I run. If it is a really bad day for allergies though I will sometimes skip running and do an indoor workout. Many parts of the US have severe allergy warnings right now and I did have to skip a run this week, is it possible this is affecting you?
By the way when I started I could literally jog only 15 seconds before having to stop or having an asthma attack and I am up to 10-12 minutes now before I have to slow down and recover so don't be discouraged!!

I wrote a blog on here about running with asthma. I will preface this by saying that as of now I've only had 2 non-exercise induced attacks, and I have the cough variant asthma. Regardless, the process should be similar (the limits may just be different). I also take 2 puffs of ProAir prior to exercise. On top of that, I spent a lot of time just walking, working on breathing patterns, and getting to know my triggers. I have a severe allergy to grass (to the point that I went into shock during my scratch test), so I know to avoid running on hot, dry, windy days. I also know that hills can trigger attacks - I've learned that this is mostly because my breathing pattern changes when I run them. I've spent extra time taking hills slowly and focusing on my breathing while walking and then jogging and then running hills - now I can run up them without an attack. I've also learned that no matter how much I train and how much I learn strategies to run with asthma, I may still have an attack and need to cut my run short. I think that was the hardest part. Not giving up after one bad day. I had to stop comparing myself to others and even to myself and what I did the day before. With asthma, a trigger may be present one day and gone the next. I think the best advice I can give you is to take your time, slow down, get to know your body, and celebrate each success no matter how small. Best of luck to you!0

Cocoa's advice is excellent.
For me, I have exercise induced asthma, and cool air is a big trigger. When I was training for my first marathon, I could barely go 15 minutes without having major problems breathing.
My doc put me on a daily steroid inhaler (Pulmicort flexhaler), and I take a puff or two of Pro Air before doing any cardio. Works like a champ, haven't had a problem since. That was over 10 years ago.
Good luck, see your doc.0 -
Thanks for all the advice ill see what my doc says hopefully get some new pumps0

I have asthma and run half marathons. I am on Advair daily and I also take my inhaler before my runs, especially if it''s cold. There was a cold front (and crazy wind) the day of my last half I ran a few weeks ago. Even after taking all precautions, I had an attack at mile two. I was able to fight through it, but I really had to do a lot of walking the last three miles.
I agree with others that you should see your doctor....0
