No you won't die but why bother to cause yourself/an those around you so much misery when there a far better ways of successfully losing weight and maintaining it?
Just a thought0 -
You know weightloss comes from burning more than you eat right? So if the milkshake and the lasagna fit into her calorie intake for weightloss....what happens?
Also so many other things wrong with your alcoholic example...my head will explode.
They didn't that's the hilarious thing, she had like 2 days of good eating, 12 of binging.
Well I didn't lie about the alcohol thing...it's true.
So 30 people can't lose weight. It depends on the induvidual, if she's losing weight on lower cals then so be it. Everyone is so hardcore with getting the right amount of macros. As long as you eat sensibly most of the time.0 -
sighs...you can't be in starvation mode if you are eating every day ..it is impossible...
People in Africa who do not eat for weeks at a time are in starvation mode....
People who miss snack 20 out of 24 are not in starvation mode..and people who eat 1200 calories a day are most certainly not in starvation mode..
If 1200 works for you ..keep doing it..if it does not then try a different method..whatever you try keep at it for four to six weeks...
He's a genius! A sexy genius at that!0 -
You will not die, you will not go into starvation mode, you will still loose weight, but very strenuous exercise may be difficult.
I have probably 500-800 calories a day. Not because I am trying to eat that low, I just enjoy the food that I eat. I occasionally go out for meals or have a takeaway and exceed 1400 calories, so it all evens out in the end..
If I was to do strenuous exercise for over an hour I would probably not have enough energy so on those days I eat more calories as I am hungrier or know I wont have the energy.
Just don't worry about it, everyone's body needs different amounts of calories, so just see how you feel. If you are like me and function perfectly fine on fewer than 1200 and are happy that way, then go for it!
I'm sorry, but your advice borders on the "slippery slope" of bad advice given. Nobody should ever say "it's okay to eat that low of calories" on MFP, because people WITH EATING DISORDERS will take that to heart and continue on their dangerous path of self destruction. It is NOT, has NEVER BEEN, and WILL NEVER BE, "okay" to eat that few calories, EVER.0 -
Since starting my diet I have been eating less than 1200cal/day. Will my body switch to starvation mode and hang onto the weight or should I just keep at it? I do an hours walk/run every day and work in a nursery school so am always busy and on the move. Any advice would be appreciated
The very low calorie diets fail because the human body is a pretty sophisticated machine that will adapt. It will regulate hormone levels to slow down your metabolism, decrease your lean body mass (less muscle = slower metabolism), and your body goes into a state where storing fat becomes easier.
Many people advocate for a small deficit to lose weight slowly so that you don't experiene those negative side effects.0 -

When i used to eat less than 1200 calories i stopped loosing any weight and i cound't do any activity other than being a couch potato....
and please don't compare people in africa with your situation....most of the starving people there don't live long and usually die early, that's why they have a high mortality rate there....do you want to join them?0 -
Starvation mode is not a switch that flips. It takes a long time for metabolic slow-down to occur. But chronic under eating is unhealthy for other reasons. You risk losing a lot of muscle instead of fat and screwing up your hormones. The healthiest way to go is to set MFP to lose 1 lb per week and eat back your exercise calories. Hopefully you're here because you want to create healthy habits that will last the rest of your life, and eating an appropriate number of calories is part of that.

He wasn't comparing, he was saying they are in starvation mode, eating is not starving.0 -

It sounds like you are relatively active. More information would be needed to suggest an appropriate calorie goal for you, but what you're doing now sounds too low for even a sedentary person who weighs considerably less.
Please take a look at this page to get some basic information on setting an appropriate calorie goal to help you lose weight in a healthy, sustainable manner:

Good luck!0 -
I don't understand why anyone would want to eat less than 1200 calories. Food is not the enemy, you need proper nutrition for energy. I lost more weight at a higher calorie diet(1480) than I ever did at 1200.
There are no short cuts to weight loss.0 -
<snip> I lived with a 30 year alcoholic for a while (till he was kicked out...obvious reasons) and he has managed to evade liver damage because he'll drink then stop for like a week to let his liver recover.
I like this guy, sounds like a Man With A Plan.
I fail to see the 'obvious reasons' though.0 -
NB: and you won't get damage if you don't do it for sustained periods, I lived with a 30 year alcoholic for a while (till he was kicked out...obvious reasons) and he has managed to evade liver damage because he'll drink then stop for like a week to let his liver recover.
This really sounds like you're advocating an unhealthy, addictive lifestyle (alcoholism and by proxy the subject of undereating) simply because they can take breaks every once in a while.

The problem with eating low calories is that it can be difficult to maintain proper nutrients (both macro and micro) if you are not careful. The fewer calories you eat, the more care needs to be taken to make sure you are getting proper nutrients.
Without proper protein/strength training, you run higher risk of muscle mass loss. Obviously, this is counter productive for someone whose goal is fat loss.
Focus on protein and healthy veggies to maintain LBM and appropriate nutrient ratios.0 -

I love you!0 -
I am also new and have been at this a while, but I am really petite, and although I sometimes consume over that 1200 mark, I am working out everyday, which dips me into that below 1200 mark. Kinda confused if that means I am doing it wrong? I lost weight. I started this to support a friend that is and just really have used this site as a guide of where I should stay around. but I do get those below calorie blah blah messages, but if I go over the 1200 I am getting negative signs and red numbers too.0

Also, yes, you can get damaged from things, even if you do not do it for a 'sustainable period'. Asked all the people who died after a night of drinking.0 -

I understand where you are coming from, a lot of people feel that way. But put it this way, my much older then you 4'11 friend eats much more then that and is still losing weight. In fact I know girls your height eating 2000 calories and are in fantastic shape. Also, when I came here mfp set me to 1200. But I found out why and adjusted accordingly.
Those below calorie blah blah blah messages are there for very good reason. The color of numbers on a site should not be your health indicator. Those are the numbers you set up. Red does not indicate weight gain, it indicates a number far below what you would gain weight on. There are a million ways to set up an account inaccurately and incorrectly, it is very easy to 'turn numbers red'. I did it for a long time before I noticed ill health effects and I was eating more then 1200. I highly recommend eating more and reading the thread ihad posted above.0
