I lost 15 pounds over the course of 9 months just by dieting (eating 1200 calories a day, no exercise). I got down to 130 at 5'5". I am a female for reference. I started running about 2 months ago for 3.5-5 miles 4 times a week. I don't weight train. I eat a little bit more, anywhere from 1400-1700 calories. I've gained 8 POUNDS and an inch in both my waist and hips!!! And that's with weighing myself 2 days after a run!!! Whatever water retention I had should have dissipated and I'm not near my monthly cylcle.

I am freaking out. I feel gross. What is going on? I asked my doctor yesterday and he said I've gained muscle. Obviously I need a new doctor because I know I can't gain that much muscle in such a short time just by running. Please, please help me.

Check out Eat More 2 Weigh Less....you are doing it and might not know it. Keep at it and the weight will come off. Your body is just hanging onto the food you're eating now because you were eating so low for so long. Once it realizes you'll be constantly eating higher calories (the right amount for your body), it'll decide to shed some weight.

Do you log every single thing and use a scale to measure?

Based on your stats and activity level, you should be losing at 1600-1700.

And you're right, you didn't put on 8 pounds of muscle from running for 2 months, unless you're a genetic freak.

My advice is to keep an accurate diary or 2 months and measure everything.

Repeating the advice of previous posters to keep a strict track of what you are eating. I made the mistake (several times over!) of thinking I could eat loads more because I was running 5 times a week when in fact I was only burning 400 cals at the most (after 4 miles!) which didn't really justify the extra potatoes, chocolate and cake!
