    a little more than 2k sqft not including the basement
    we already have the duct work, our unit from last year

    absolutely love central air, we had it installed in our old house, adds a lot for resale value and comfort (we had a 1224 sq. ft bungalow). We're going to install it in our new house (1,178 sq ft modified bi-level we had built in 2011/12 and moved into last January) once we do the landscaping in the yard which will be this spring (yay grass! no more clay!)

    it's more convenient, but I think it was cheaper to have individual units in the rooms we use the most. i'll probably live here till they wheel me out in a wheel chair or I can't go upstairs any more.

    More than 2k Sq. ft? you need a 5ton unit.
    1 ton for every 500 sq. ft.

    And I do recommend buying a well known name like Trane or Carrier.

    Without knowing where you live, it's going to be impossible to give you any solid advice. Especially pertaining to tonnage or local rules about efficiency.

    Best generic advice: Buy a good unit, get at least three quotes, go with the best value (not necessarily the cheapest!)
