Just curious to know if anyone on here is going this year (May 20). I am really looking forward to a nice flat course... a tiara and a medal with some bling. Not to mention the glass of champagne at the finish!! This will be my third half in preperation for a full - the Rock & Roll in Savannah, GA and then the Disney Full in January (hopefully).

I wish I had known about it. It's not too far to drive for me. The Boy has a piano recital that day, though.

Me too! My first two were hilly courses so I am really looking foward to a nice flat course - with a hopefully much improved time compared to my previous two (I am not a Kenyan, what can I say... just a slow poke on the distance runs that likes to take in the scenery!)-- I love the beach -- so I am going to make a really long weekend out of this trip!

Yeah I'm coming down thursday night, to get some beach time in on friday and saturday. All of my halfs were in Central Park, which is nothing but rolling hills. Most of my long runs are now on flat, so I can get used to it. I'm just worried about the heat, it's just starting to get warm up here. My friend did Divas Hawaii and the course wasn't so scenic, so I'm hoping that Myrtle is a lot better.

WOW -- How could Hawaii NOT be scenic! :noway: I hope Myrtle is better too! I have a work conference the 15-18th so I won't be arriving until Saturday -- but am going to stay through Wed. I am hoping the early morning start along with an ocean breeze will help with the possible heat.

I am signed up, it will be my first half. I have done a relay where I did 2 legs, total distance near 12 miles so I think I will be ready by May 20th! Super excited - I am hoping for a flat course. Is there a course map with elevation somewhere to check it out?

I haven't found an elevation map but I am 99% sure that it will be flat... and least I am hoping it as well.
  • I'm not doing the Diva but doing Geist 1/2 5-19. I'm also signed up for the Disney Goofy Challenge in January 2013 so is the full you are ding the Mickey that weekend?

Yes, I am doing the full that weekend... if all goes as planned this year it will be my second full. I am planning on doing Savannah in November.

I am doing the Diva Run in Myrtle Beach. Very flat and should be warm. Thank goodness the race starts early so it shouldn't be too bad. I am also doing the Rock and Roll in Savannah. I am doing the 1/2 marathon for both. Haven't decided if I am going to attempt a Full Marathon yet. don't know if the legs can take that much abuse.

Wow - which full are you doing!! WOW!

I plotted the course and it is FLAT - only 40 feet climbs and descends - YAY. Here is an image of the plot (note the climb and descends are only 40 feet!), so even though they look like 'hills' they are not really.

AND I am not sure why it is .18 extra - I followed the course map on the site. My only worry now is the heat, I think coming out we will be fine, and probably at 9:30 AM at the end we are probably still OK but just slightly worried - hope they will have a mist of water sprayers along the race course.

  • Have you decided where you are staying in Disney for the Mickey full marathon? We have made no plans yet. I'm considering Carribean Beach or Port Orleans. I did one full marathon in 2010 & I'm doing one in Indy this October so the Disney will make 3 for me.

@linnett - that's great-- I sent a friend request since we are doing the same runs.

@Sbarnes - Some of my friends are renting a condo close by - I am sure if you look at vrbo.com you can find some pretty good deals that are close to the park.

@corrieander: Thanks for mapping that out. I am doing the full Savannah Rock & Roll in November and then Disney in January. I am also doing the Go Commando half marathon in Clarksville, TN in October. Its not to far and I like the medal and they are doing running shorts instead of a t-shirt.

    Nice!

I may do a marathon later on, not sure - I want to see how I feel after this half first. If I do one I am interested in a Disney one, they look like so much fun.

Cooriander - Disney (January 2013) is only 56% full so you can jump in :)

I may still do the Disney - DH does not want to do it anymore because we signed up for a full in OCT, so he bailed out on the Disney. i checked and Disneay is still open. I will wait until after the Divas to make my decision on Disney.

Hey Shelly - I am so excited about this half - I think it will be real fun!

Right now the weather will be perfect - 63F at 7AM and sunny, and then it will warm up to 66 at 9 AM at finish and still sunny - at 10 AM there may be some showers - so we will nee to be speedy if we don't want to get wet. LOL.

65F is perfect for running at a good speed and comfortable. I will not get overheated.

I am really nervous this will be my longest ever, I am really a short distance runner - like really short - 800m. I am hoping my legs will hold up at this distance, I based by goal on my 5K times, but I think 2hrs is optimistic.. My longest distance right now is 15K that I did a couple of weeks ago. BUT really, my real goal is just not to walk. I know I will have fun - it is an adventure, the whole family is coming up!

Maybe someone is interested in the below - I was trying to figure out what to wear for different weather/temperature conditions - because I just hate being too hot! - and I don't like to be too cold either.

I found two interesting articles - the first one is a blog post about what to wear for a marathon - here the idea is to dress to the current temperature but to add 20 degrees to the temp, so for example if the current or predicted temperature is 63F, the dress for 83F:
    http://www.oiselle.com/blog/what-to-wear-for-marathon

And here is a what to wear 'calculator' from runner's world:

How did everyone do? I am still not a Kenyan but I did manage to shave 5 minutes off my last half that I ran last month. On the bright side, I am five minutes closer to reaching my ultimate goal!

I thought the event was well done and my boyfriend and I extended our stay until Wednesday. We stayed at Ocean Creek and will definately go back there again. You just cant beat the price for a 1 bedroom condo only a few minutes walk to the beach. We are already gearing up for next year!!!

I also found a couple of great restaurants while there - Market Bistro a great little Italian place with great food and even better prices! Everything made from scratch. I also fell in love with Lulu's Market Cafe in Myrtle on Ocean Blvd.

We had a great time and great weather!

I loved the course (flat), spirit and the weather! Had an absolutely fabulous time! My family was there to support me too, I felt lucky and in great shape! So much improvements (health wise) this year.

I am happy with my time, I am now signed up for a full marathon in October and another half in June. I am still considering the Disney, but I am not so sure.

I wish I had recognized my fellow MFPallers.
