giving up due to depression

Hello everyone

I started a weight loss program two months ago and have got really good results with it, lost 9 pounds, I was 83 kg and now I am 79 kg and the reading can sometimes reach 77 kg if I did not eat anything.

So I am pretty pleased with my results. However, I failed one of my practical exams, I was very unlucky. I did not fail because I did not work hard, I failed cause I did not pay attention to timing. As a result I have to resit this exam in about 12 days from now. The problem is I am depressed now and cannot do this anymore. I cannot move on with my diet and I am not exercising because I do not want to fail my exams again. I keep weighing myself everyday afraid that all my effort will go, but I feel bad, really bad, because before my exam results I was going to the gym everyday, I was dieting, I was doing pull ups, push ups, chin ups, dips, bench press...all the stuff, in addition to the recommended work outs

The problem now is the next 12 days I return to a static lifestyle, with nothing to do except study cause of the panic. There is also going to be ramadan on the 15th of next months, so following the diet plan will not be possible. My priority is to pass the exam now..but its a disappointment, I want to see my abs, my chest muscles, but these dreams all gone now, got to pass exams.

I think if you can just give yourself 30 minutes a day to walk, jog, do a workout DVD you will feel a lot better. Not only will it do your body good and keep you from completely losing all the progress you've made but it will be good for you mentally to take a break from the books and clear your head for a bit.

As for diet. It's not about being perfect ALL the time, but most of the time. Make sure you have healthy snacks around, drink water, and do your best with meals.

I don't want to sound harsh, but all I see in your post is excuses. Don't let them get the best of you. You can do this.

    Good luck,

    Linda

If you're going to be sitting a lot, get yourself one of those big fitness balls to sit on. Even if you aren't doing active exercises on it, just the effort to balance on it helps with core muscles. Hang in there, pass those exams and get back on track! Don't give up!! :)

Don't give up! Even if you have to take it easy on the exercise for the next twelve days, twelve days is only a tiny part of the big picture, and you can get back on track again if you falter slightly.

Is it possible for you to exercise and study at the same time? When I was still in school, I would often go to the gym and set a book across the handlebars of a stationary bike or on the control panel of the treadmill so that I could study while I exercised. It didn't allow for much outside of the bike and the treadmill, but at least it kept me from being completely sedentary while studying for finals.

    Good luck!

First of all quit the depression I understand completely how you feel but you can not let that control you. You know if you do make the test next time then you will feel bad that you did not put any effort into dieting adn exercising so there will be a regret to that. I am going through that now about my husbands job he's a bball coach adn its hard. You just have to push through and not regret anything. You need to find a book or something that motivates you.

I worried about everything and was even getting on anti depressants(which I do believe are needed in some cases). But I am not exercising or "dieting" sweetie. Please look at my diary. It's public. I feel you are beating yourself., and fat-loss and shaping up shouldn't be self-torture or deprivation. If I am not healthy physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually nothing in my life will go right. Your studies and eating right, taking a little walk(like the other lady mentioned)can go hand in hand. Please stay here with us and let us encourage you. I am 57 and actually lived in a shelter at one time. I am starting my life over and we can all do that. I am not telling you your depression will go away. I am not an expert or a doctor. Just a woman who has survived and for me, MFP peeps and their smarts and support are doing nothing but enhancing every part of my life.

PS I eat normal food and have not gotten any exercise since last Friday. I have lost another inch in my waist this week and another lb. I eat all my calories and if I do workout in any way, I eat either all my exercise calories or about 1/2 to 2/3's.

Depression is hard. People who don't have it don't understand how debilitating it can be. But that's one of the reasons why I go on this site, because when I don't have any motivation, the people in the forums will, my friend updates will, and I can use that to keep pushing forward.

You can work out while studying. http://www.hercampus.com/health/your-work-workout-exercises-stay-fit-desk-job

You can walk to a library to study. You can do jumping jacks when you take bathroom breaks. You can quiz yourself or solve a problem in your head while you do push ups. I used studying as an excuse, too, and it didn't help any. I did poorly on my exam as well, because I wasn't getting the exercise I needed and wasn't being healthy, and as a result didn't study as much as I should have. All I did was gain weight. You just need to be creative.

Good luck. There are lots of people pulling for you, even if we don't know you.

no, you're not giving up! you're upset and reaching out for help here--which is SMART. I know what it's like to have the buzzer go off before you're done on a major exam. deep breath and FORGIVE yourself! it happens. You know with your determination that's NOT going to happen next time!

Make your self take a time out, just 10 minutes or so and step outside for a quick walk. It'll clear your head and help with the studying. Enjoy Laylat al-Qadr and good luck with your studies!

There are so many things you can do @ home to save time, I just bought the book "Look better naked" by Women's Health magazine...I was so tired last night and did not feel like going to the gym. So, I just did a quick workout from the book and was sweating like crazy!! Don't worry, worrying only makes you feel worse. Even if you can't go everyday, still eat healthy and workout when you can fit it in. Plus, the working out will give you more energy to study! Focus mainly on your studies right now, eat healthy and fit in little workouts when you can, and your reward will be that you can get back to your regular workouts when you pass the exam! :) Don't give up on anything, just restructure a little for now.

Hello. I'm new here so I may not have a whole lot of experience in the weight loss area. But depression and giving up, this I know. I also know that giving up is NOT the answer. You have made great progress in the month or so you've been at this. Don't take 1 step forward and then 2 steps back! There's alot of helpful opinions and options for you posted here. I'd pick the ones that make most sense, or are easiest to do, and stick with them for the next 2 weeks. You'll feel better mentally and physically. I don't think you should weigh yourself every day. Maybe you could hold off on the weigh in until after the exam. That'll give you a long goal to strive for. You'll "feel" the results instead of actually measuring them. This will probably help your confidence on the exam as well. Good luck. Hopefully we'll hear from you soon telling us you aced the exam! Til then, Chris
  • Hi guys, I passed my retake, thank you for all your support. I have not gained much weight in the process either. THank you alll.

Don't give up!! Studies show that exercise helps with staying focused and doing better academically. I work at an elementary school that has a "wellness" program. I teach one of the 5 P.E.'s that we have. The kids have P.E. every single day!!!! And do you know why??? It's because exercise releases endorphins in the brain that helps to stimulate the brain and the kids do better in the classroom. It's not new news....society has known about this for centuries now, but unfortunately not enough people are taking it seriously. Last year, we had the kids run for about 20-30 minutes prior to their standardized testing (which happens once a year) and the results are staggering!! They all improved. So...this whole speech is to tell you that exercise WILL help with your test.
Add me as a friend if you'd like to learn more, or even if you don't want to learn more..it's nice to have a support group. :o)
    Good luck!
