I only wear mine when I exercise. I like to keep track of my heart rate while exercising. I have the FT7 so it keeps track of my heart rate.0

I only do mine while exercising. It could be a nice experiment for you if you choose to wear it all day on an non-workout day out of curiosity. I only use it when I know I am going to burn a large amount of calories.0

A HRM is for activity only. Working out etc. It will not be accurate if worn all day. Just not the way they are designed. If you want to know your burn for the entire day, I would recommend the fitbit. That will keep track of your calories from your entire day, even sleeping. Fitbit also keeps info such as steps taken, flights climbed etc.0

The book that came with my Polar says wear it for 3 24-hour periods to get an idea of how many calories you burn each day. I did that and it was a bit more than I expected.0

Are you sure it said that? I've never seen a HRM that was made to wear for anything but steady state cardio exercises. They aren't accurate if your heart rate isn't elevated and would give a significantly elevated number if worn all day.0 -

yeah, it says that and the manufacturer says it will be accurate no matter what your activity. This is apparently a hot topic for many and I do not want to argue about it. it is just another tool that provides estimates and I use it as that.0 -

The polar HRM I bought (I think the 60? I'm not sure) It says its meant for exercising, because its unable to get an accurate read when my HR is below a certain point-- a point that I wouldn't reach just regularly during my day anyways.
I like using my fitbit for daily activities though. They have extremely good customer service too, best I've experienced ever.
And I heard good things about the bodybugg hrm, but its a little pricer, so I don't have personal stories about that. If and when I can afford it, I'm probably going to invest in it. It really looks awesome and accurate. New toy0 -
If you contact Polar, they will tell you it is ONLY accurate when working out. Anything below a certain Heart RAte and it is not accurate. Email them, they will tell you the truth.0

I did emaithem and this is what I got:
Thank you contacting Polar Customer Care, we apologize for the delayed response, Polar has received an influx of e-mails recently.
Calories are calculated by heart rate data and user information (age, weight, height, gender). Therefore your calories would be accurate no matter how you were exercising.
As long as the transmitter strap is wet, snug around your sternum and you are seeing accurate heart rate data on your watch, your watch will calculate your calories accurately.

Only when I'm exercising! The battery would get drained if I used it all the time..0

And I am dumbfounded at the correspondence from the HRM manufacturers I've read lately. It honestly boggles the mind and calls into question everything I thought I knew about the science behind HRMs.0 -

That being said if there is a new watch with different math and hardwhere you never know....though last I checked there was no way to measure some of the things you would need in a watch. But you can read your heart rate with video and light now which is pretty cool but does not help with the calorie counting accuracy0 -
I don't mean to thread jack but I'm considering a Polar HRM vs a FitBit or BodyMedia and did I just read the chest strap has to be WET!??!0

Polar does have some products that are meant to take measurements 24/7, so those particular HRMs are apparently meant to give some sort of estimate as to your total daily calorie burn. That's one possibility. However I am skeptical as to the accuracy, and wondering if they are trying to get in on the BMF/fitbit markets.
You do need some moisture on the chest strap to get a good heart rate reading, however some people seem to need more than others. If you work up a sweat, that's the amount of moisture that's necessary. I moisten mine enough to make it quite damp before I use it. Some people use something like an aloe vera gel.
As far as an all-day calorie burn tool, from what I read, the BMF is probably more accurate than the fitbit. The fitbit seems to be more like a pedometer with a few bells and whistles. And I would stick to the HRM for cardio training purposes.
Keep in mind, though, that ALL of these tools are just giving you estimates. They are all inaccurate to some extent or another. They can be useful, but they're not the be-all and end-all.0 -

Unless of course if you have the fabric strap in that case you can't lick it to make it wet, it actually needs to be put under a tap.0 -
Mine's fabric. But the contact point is vinyl.0

The new replacement straps I just got Do Not Need to be wet down or have the Buh Bump cream applied. The contact strips are now merged into a roughly 6-7 inch strip that lays directly over the sternum and is not made out of cloth. The Strap has been working great upstairs at the YMCA but I have yet to try it out in the Pool (which I will be doing Monday). The only complaint I have about the new straps is they are not as rigid all the way around so they tend to fold over (if that makes sense) but other than that I like them,..... Best of Luck.....0 -

Yes, for an accurate reading. No biggie, you are going to be sweating in five minutes anyway. I run it under the tap.
To the OP, only when training, otherwise the battery runs out.0
