How does it work? Do you need to be able to download the app for it to be worth it? I have a kindle fire and no smartphone, so I don't think I can get the app.

To get the information from it you either need to connect to your PC by USB (which you need to do anyway to charge) or need a device with Bluetooth (for the LINK) Does the Kindle have Bluetooth? If it does you can use the LINK with the app. It does cost monthly. If you haven't checked out the website that is the best way to learn about it. I have the LINK and love it.0

The app is only really useful for the bluetooth version or looking at past days (e.g. I use the app to look at how much sleep I've been getting) or meal logging if you aren't using MFP syncing. I don't think the Kindle Fire has bluetooth support, and if it does I'm not sure if the android app works on it.
The USB versions... depends how often you are near your Windows PC or Mac (software is required for syncing and charging) unless you generally do the same thing every day (it gets used to your activity level and makes assumptions about how active you'll be before midnight) or you do something like eating back your exercise calories the next day. I generally sync it a few times a day to see where I am calorie-wise.
I have the Ki Fit and a Ki subscription (UK body media) so can't comment on the Body Media website, but the Ki activity manager appears to work without flash (tested on my iPad). That is pretty much the same information the app would give you if using the USB version (don't know if the food diary works as mine is linked to MFP).
When I'm not near my computer I use my Ki Display to see my calories burned, but that's because I have a habit of under-eating when I'm active, then I sync with my laptop when I'm back home.0 -
I'm not sure if bodymedia makes an app for Kindle. Either way, you don't "need" the app- you can buy a small display that will show you real-time information from the band if you don't have Bluetooth. Otherwise, you just have to wait until you are near your computer to physically sync the information via USB.
The bodymedia works by collecting data about your activity levels, steps, & sleep. It gives you a pretty accurate idea of what your daily calorie burn is. You still have to do the work of tracking your food though. Luckily, bodymedia syncs with Myfitnesspal, so it's pretty easy.0
